Family (parents and my sister) was in the waiting room( my parents were there the whole time). But they respected us when we said it was just us during labor and right after. When we were ready we told them to come back and meet her. I also told them my Mom got to hold her first and no one said anything about that either.

I didn't tell any other family we were in labor cause I didn't want anyone at the hospital. My friend is a nurse where I delivered and happened to be there visiting someone else. I had texted my girlfriends so she knew I was there but not that I had her yet. The nurse asked if she could come in and I said no, I wanted the grandparents to meet her first. She was totally fine with it.

Haha. My hospital is a very friendly hospital so.....my parents were ushered up and knocked on my door while I was pushing. I cursed and told the nurses to get them out of there. I bet the nurse was nicer to them than I was at that moment. ;-)

@LBee: OMG that is so terribly awkward !!! If I see the doctor and there are visitors , I'll make sure to usher them out !

As for me : I wish I had known about the privacy feature for the first time (gramma came to
Visit while I was being induced and having contractions , etc). This time we won't tell anyone we are at the hospital (except whoever is watching LO1 and we will swear them to
Secrecy ) until After baby is born !

@regberadaisy: DH worked through my bedrest and I think people thought I was "lonely." The worst was when our minister came to visit me and the doctor came in to round and he didn't leave (WTF?!) and she was asking me about my bleeding, etc

I did not have this problem during L&D, but when I was on bedrest they were really respectful of my privacy. I wasn't in a great place emotionally and they made it clear that if I ever needed them to put a sign on my door that I was not taking visitors anymore that they would happily do it. It was a weird scenario, though, as I was on bedrest next door to a family member so when people came to visit her, they would often visit me afterwards.

@littlebug: I worked in registration for a while at a hospital. If someone checked in privately we were supposed to pretend like they didn't exist if someone asked about them.

Our L&D unit is separate from the rest of the hospital. You have to get through the nurse desk to get to the room. During labor and for an hour after, only the SO/labor coach and two designated people with passes we give out are allowed through.

I'd imagine if you told the nurses you don't want visitors they will oblige. But unless your hospital has something in place I'm not sure they can prevent the genera operator from giving your room number out?

A family member (who was absolutely welcome to visit) came that was kind of a big deal at the hospital and the nurses were excited. I was in the washroom (trying to poop!) when she arrived and came out to about ten unknown nurses crowding in my room wanting to take pictures with my family member.
It was super awkward. All I wanted was to go to the bathroom but couldn't because of the mêlée.

I had a random male coworker and his wife show up to visit me. It was so awkward, but thankfully I was with LO, who was in the NICU, and they were very strict about who could go in. This time I definitely will ask for the private option because I don't want a repeat of that (although I don't work at the same place, so I doubt it'll happen again).

I didn't have a need to for family or visitors. But at the time I worked at a residential facility for pregnant and parenting young women as a therapist. So there was always the possibility of me being on the floor with a client. I mentioned this to the nurses at L&D and they called ahead to the recovery unit. I was ensured a private room (there were a few shared rooms), and they told me they wee more cautious about where my name was written, etc.
I just didn't want to have to randomly encounter a client during that time. I don't think there were any there, but it was nice peace of mind.

My hospital has a waiting room outside of the secured L&D area. If visitors come the nurses ask if the mom if they can come in and then they are escorted back. If mom says no the nurses play the had guy. To me, even getting notified there are visitors is stressful. We aren't sharing where we are giving birth (my mom has asked) and I doubt any of my family is that curious to play super sleuth to figure it out.

Security was huge at my hospital. They ask you when you sign in if its okay to confirm that you are at the hospital if someone calls looking for you. They then ask if there are any privacy concerns or people that you want to ensure do not get access. There is a huge security desk with 2-3 guards when you enter the women's hospital wing and everyone has to show ID and get a giant sticker pasted to their shirt with their driver's license photo on it before they can pass through the doors. Then at each floor or ward you have to give the name of the patient before they will buzz you in from the elevators.

I actually had a bad time with a million hospital employees parading through my room every 5 seconds and I had a nervous breakdown about it, so the head nurse had a sign put on my door that would not allow anyone to access my room without first paging my shift nurse. She would then come in and ask me if it was okay before anyone entered. We will DEFINITELY be doing this again for #2.

I didn't choose the privacy option so I can't really comment on it. When I did my hospital tour I noticed one of my friend's names on the board. It was disguised with first four initials of her last name or something like that. Regardless it was enough for DH and I to recognize it. We texted her BFF to inquire - she was on bed rest and some bad drugs. We ended up taking her husband out for a burrito.

I did not know this was a thing but I personally would have no need for this. My family is not the type to just show up at the hospital unannounced or uninvited.

My hospital also requires all visitors to check in, show ID, and receive a visitors badge before entering the unit.

I did not. When DD2 was born, my mom, sister and DD1 came right to the hospital. They were sent into the delivery room (we weren't even on the postpartum floor yet) without anyone on staff asking me if that was okay. When they knocked, a nurse opened the door and greeted them with "Firstname Lastname?" He used the baby's name, of course. We had been Team Green, and that is how my daughter, mom and sister learned my kid's sex and name. Also, I couldn't even sit up yet, and now I had visitors and a toddler climbing on me. I knew they were coming to the hospital and was happy for that. I didn't think they'd just be sent in without permission and have the birth announced to them.

Privacy fail, hospital.

I had the nurses put a note that any visitors had to check in with them first when they would then go ask me if I wanted the person allowed in. I did this because I was emotional about D's trouble and because I didn't want random people dropping in like they did for K, for example my parents' pastor.

I didn't do it but I was t expecting random visitors who I hadn't talked to first. Our hospital requires all visitors to the unit to check in, show ID and get a visitor badge and they said if there was anyone we didn't want there they would make a note to turn them away. I may consider going private next time because my mother could become an issue.

I had no need- most of our family live 4 or more hours away anyway, and everyone respected my wishes about visitors. I really cannot fathom why people wouldn't, but I certainly know it happens. We had very few hospital visitors both times, as I wanted.

However we didn't tell people when I went into labor either time. BIL knew because he watched our dog the first time and our daughter the second time. Other than that we told people after they were born. I didn't even want the stress of knowing people were waiting for an update, plus I figured what was the point I telling them I was in labor so they would just worry all night.

HIPAA only prevents the hospital from releasing information on your condition. They can confirm you are a patient, but can't disclose why (though on an L&D floor, that's pretty obvious). As a hospital employee, it is generally not my practice to provide room numbers to random callers, but I think that's just me; it's not a HIPAA violation to do so to my knowledge. If people are showing up at the hospital, staff generally assume they know you're there and are just not sure of the room number. If you want more control over your visitors, you have to let the staff know when you get there.

At the hospitals where I've worked, security won't do anything about it, but the staff can put a sign on your door directing people to stop at the desk before entering your room. Then the staff can tell people they can/can't visit.
