Yes, which I did for E's dating scan- and I cried and cried, it hurt so bad. So here's what I did for every scan after: 48 hours before I drank and drank to get really hydrated for a good picture. Then I peed about half an hour before we left, then drank my 32 oz in the car on the way over. It was in my bladder by the time of my scan and they were happy.

Nope – I've never been told to drink anything for any of my ultrasounds. And they've actually always had me pee beforehand as well so I've always had ultrasounds with an empty bladder.

Well, having said on here that I'd never been told to drink before an ultrasound, today when I went in I asked to pee, and she said I needed my bladder full. When I said I'd never had to do that before, for anatomy scans or any others (including at the same office), she acted like I was completely crazy. So...? But I'm glad they didn't tell me ahead of time. I actually peed when we first arrived and only asked to go again because I didn't want to be uncomfortable, not because I really bad needed to go.

I didn't have to do it for my dating u/s (10-11 weeks) which was transvaginal, but I had to do it for my anatomy u/s (21 weeks) which was the outside u/s. The tech told me that it is not necessary for the transvaginal u/s that I had for the dating u/s.

Drinking 32 oz of water prior to the anatomy u/s was to help get a good measurement of the cervix, iirc. She took those measurements first and let me pee right after. Then she let me pee again at the halfway point, and I went again once we were done (because preggo, hehe)

My bladder doesn't hold anywhere close to 32oz not pregnant! I know for sure, because I had to pee in a starbucks cup on the side of the road when we got stuck in traffic once (deep snow, so didn't want to squat, and the cup was all I had). The cup was a grande so, 16oz? I filled it almost all the way up, and at that point my bladder was bursting. And I absolutely couldn't have held it any longer, or I would have! I did NOT want to pee outside! So 32oz while pregnant is a total joke. I'm literally peeing every 10 minutes right now if I drink too much water at once. But I do have a very small bladder. (And sorry that's a fairly tmi story, but it's relevant!)

I not only didn't have to do a hold before, I was told specifically to pee before going in. I can't imagine how miserable I'd be with them doing all that pressing on my belly with a full bladder! Pretty sure I'd ask why they need it and refuse unless they made a very convincing argument!

No way!! I just had my 20w scan (I also had ones at 12 and 16w). My MFM actually makes me go pee just before they start! They do an internal ultrasound first that they need an empty bladder for and then they do the external u/s... with an empty bladder.

So to be honest, I think once you're that far along the size o f your bladder probably does not make a huge difference in whether they can see the uterus/baby well enough (they are both big at that point!). If it was me, I would really not sweat it. Not worth being totally miserable.
