@sorrycharlie: Is it kind of like a tetanus shot? Those hurt and the pain lasts a couple of days for me. But it's not unbearable!

@Adira: Yeah, they told my husband they didn't care what his blood type was, I need to get the shot no matter what! (I guess in case the baby wasn't his? Obviously it is, but I guess in some cases you never know! Better safe than sorry).

@GreeneB2: For me, after it was injected, the pain was minimal. It didn't make me sore like the flu shot did!

Also, at my practice, they don't even care what your DH's blood type is since they don't trust you when you say he's the father, haha. They give the shot based solely on what your blood type is!

@GreeneB2: It's not THAT bad lol. Just a lot of fluid injected which I think made it burn for me. And my buttcheek/hip area or whatever was sore that day and the next - but nothing like, crippling!

I'm supposed to get this shot at 28 weeks (in two weeks) and now I scared! I hate shots! I'm type O-, don't know what DH is. They didn't test him. Are there any side affects besides a burning pain? I'm really dreading this now.

I'm surprised the shot hurt for so many people :( I had it three times and it didn't. So it's not always so bad! It was ridiculously hard to get it though... the hospital treated it like some high security drug and made me give a blood sample to confirm I'm Rh- even though they had paperwork from my OB.

I appreciate this thread. I knew that I'm going to have to get the shot, but had no idea why people were making a big thing about it (i.e. both my mom and DH's mom made a point of asking if I was going to get it, etc.). I was like, it's just a shot, I'm getting poked and stabbed a million times during this pregnancy, what difference does one more shot make? I had no idea it apparently causes burning pain. Good to know!

I use to work in OB/GYN I would usually inject in the arm .... its nice and easy but I did notice the moms who were on the 2nd pregnancies were usually the 1st to drop their pants and moon me....they were much happier when i informed them that though their great & all... I really was goin for their arm...not their butt!

@Anya: Better than what I did. I had heard that it was in your butt, so I just went ahead and took my pants off while I waited for the doctor. Apparently we do it in the arm in Canada... so the doctor was somewhat surprised to walk in on a pants-less pregnant lady.

But I don't remember it hurting?

Ugh, yes! I've had it in the thigh, the top of the butt, and the arm! I always forget how much it BURNS going in!!! I had to get it three times with my first pregnancy and twice so far with this one. I'm just assuming I'll have to get again after birth too.

I'm O- and DH is A+ so yeah I had to get it. Holly crap that hurt - I got the shot in my hip and the nurse injected it slowly. Sucked. Luckily, turns out DS is O- so I didn't have to get the 2nd shot after he was born. After 17 hrs of labor and then a C section I was not up for that shot.

@PurplePeony: @meganmp: I am positive, so this didn't come up for me, but my friend is negative and her DH was tested, also negative. Her OB was still encouraging her to get the shot and she couldn't figure out why, if there was no way for the baby to be positive with the two negatives... finally she realized they basically wanted to give her an out in case there was any chance whatsoever that her DH wasn't the dad. She was 100% certain so declined. I believe they tested her husband at her OB's office.

I did! Yeowch.

My mom is A-. When she went into her doctor when she was pregnant with me, he saw her blood type and told her she had to get it. She said no, I don't, you're forgetting to ask me something. He told her she was ignorant, and that he was right, he wasn't forgetting anything. She said yes, you are, you don't know my husband's blood type. He told her it doesn't matter what her husband's blood type is, she needs to get it. My dad is A- as well, so no shot is needed, and the doctor didn't think this was relevant. My mom found care elsewhere.

@Boopers: usually around 24-26 weeks, but if your blood type is positive you won't have to get it .

I'm AB- so I was supposed to get it, but DH took one for the team and had his blood type done. He had to provide my MWs with proof from his doctor that he's also negative and then they waived the shot.
