We gave juice or a little apple puree - I think starting somewhere between 4 and 5 months. Poor DS had this problem all the time with formula, and the juice made a big difference!

We gave him juice when he started solids because of constipation. It was super diluted (about 3oz water, 1oz pear juice) and we only gave it once per day. He also hated plain water at that age and would just spit it out.

I gave DD diluted pear juice at 4 months for constipation. It didn't help her at all. When she was a bit older prune purée was the winner.

I had to give my LO juice around 4 or 5 months old to help with constipation. You can also find a prune juice concentrate with prebiotics at cvs or walgreens. You just add it to his bottle once or twice a day. When we started that regularly he had no more problems.

Thanks everyone, you are all super helpful! I think I'll just give it to him the next couple of days until we see the ped again on Wednesday and hopefully come up with a game plan then, whether it is switching formula or what!

I am feeling so ridiculously guilty for stopping EP-ing now, ugh. :-(

If you can get your son to take a little warm water that can help move things along. If you're throwing an ounce of prune juice in your milk bottles, I don't think it's going to turn your baby into a juice fiend.

hmmm we didn't have this problem with formula. what about miralax? 4 oz of juice seems like a lot on top of bottles, but i don't really know. apple juice makes E poop like 8x a day now, so we have a hard time giving it to her.

We are facing this right now. We had to change to soy formula and it's helping all of our other problems but now we are facing some constipation issues. We are a little older (5.5 months) and getting ready to start solids but I was considering getting pear juice. I wasn't going to give it straight but substitute in our formula. So instead of 6 oz water for the formula - 5 oz water, 1 oz pear juice.

My nephew had severe constipation and the doctor told my SIL to give him apple juice regularly - it worked, but he was a little older (at least 6 months). It also turned him into a juice a holic, so there's that.

We had this problem when we supplemented with formula. Maybe try a different brand? (We ended up getting some donor milk).

Do you think giving him water instead of juice might help? It'd have to be boiled and then cooled until he's 6 months. I would think that all the sugars in juice would only compound the problem.

@edelweiss: Yes he is super fussy and every time he starts trying to poop just starts screaming like crazy because its been so dry / huge. I feel so bad for him :-( We go to the dr Wednesday for his 4 month check up so I'm hoping maybe she has other ideas on how to help him!

i'm assuming there have been no changes like switching formula? if i had been in the same situation, i would see what the next week goes like. if the constipation returns and my ped ok'd it, which yours has, i would probably start with a smaller amount of unsweetened pear or prune juice per day, like 1oz., just to see. does your LO seem pretty unhappy?

@Truth Bombs: Thanks, no we haven't started solids as he just turned 4 months today. It's weird because he's been on the same formula since birth, I was EP-ing but we transitioned super slowly and now all of a sudden he is having so many GI issues.

I personally wouldn't give juice that early. Have you started solids at all? Maybe try some prune puree if you have. If not, perhaps consider other formula brands that might work better for him.

DS is 4 months old and has been getting more and more constipated - his last liquid-y poop was over a week ago and finally today I just spent over 3 hours with a thermometer / suppositories (recommended by our ped). He finally passed 4 giant stools so I'm hoping this is the start of better days, but our dr recommended giving him 4 oz of juice a day to keep him regular now.

My older daughter didn't have juice until she was 18 months, but she was breast fed and DS is now on all formula. Is this a normal thing to give such a young baby juice? It seems weird to me but I will do it if I can avoid the awful constipation!
