My mom was a big stickler about having your bed made. Now I'm the the bed-making enforcer in our house. I've even trained DH (who never once made his bed growing up) to make it when he gets up in the morning. Not as much on school days, but definitely on weekends and summers. We were taught how to make hospital corners as soon as we were big enough to lift the corner of the mattress. I'm just thankful we didn't have to iron the sheets (my mom grew up with starched sheets) I don't make my bed as much now (I'm usually up before DH), but I'm thankful I at least learned how to do it properly. Our guest room looks nicer when I make the bed in there versus when DH does. My husband and I leave our bed unmade to this day! We do usually make it right before bed so that the sheets are smooth and tucked in well. Studies have shown it's actually healthier (fewer dust mites, less hospitable to bed bugs) to leave your bed unmade. I remember cleaning my room as a child causing me physical pain. lol I love a clean house as an adult, but it took me a long time to get there. I make my bed everyday now and will teach my children to do the same. I was supposed to, but it was never really enforced that much. We never make our bed unless we are changing the sheets or having people coming over. But our nanny usually makes the bed for us while the baby is sleeping! It's not part of her job so it must really drive her nuts that we don't bother to do this. The kids bedrooms were upstairs and all the other rooms were downstairs so no one saw our rooms (including my parents) unless they made a special trip upstairs. I am a militant bed maker now and I don't even take my girls out of their rooms in the morning until I have made their beds (and mine of course). In fact my mum bought me a poster for my room that read "I never make my bed more than once a week to avoid wearing out the bedclothes". I am a daily bed maker now though and get really mad when DH gets out of the bed last but doesn't make it. I didn't have to make the bed with sheets, or change them either. In retrospect, I wish I had developed better habits around making my bed every morning! I'd like to get our kids making their beds, so wondering what everyone's bed-making policy was growing up!
