The second one was the britax advocate and I wasn't about to have spent all that money on a carseat that wasn't going to be correctly installed. I wanted it to work as well as it possibly could. They fixed it for us both times. Infant capsules only go up to six months max (hence renting for $75 as opposed to buying for $250+) so we bought a convertible when LO was five months old but have not had that checked. In my county there's one voice mail number to call for the whole county. Then you wait to hear back from your local FD or PD. It took about two weeks of phone calls and emails to get an appointment -- argh to budget cuts. The local AAA has inspections monthly. We were told we had to bring the car seat manual and car manual but the officer didn't look at them. My husband is pretty crazy about making sure it's secure, though, so I think we're ok. Maybe it was a fire sation. DH went alone because I wasn't feeling well when he went, so I just put professional when I answered. We are glad we did! DH made a good effort but he did it wrong. Also the professional gave DH good tips. Its usually an officer who has the certification. In our area they will even come to your home instead of having you drive to the station. She helped me pick my seat based off the kind of car we have and DS's measurements. And she helped me install it. They had RNs who were state certified in car seat installation do it. They can get the infant seat so much more secure than we can and they were better at getting the right angle on our convertible seat. I love the peace of mind it gives me. It was great because he showed us a lot of little tips and tricks, and then uninstalled it and made us re-install it ourselves. I definitely feel more confident about it because of him! They installed both car seats twice. We installed it ourselves and they made minor adjustments. I would definitely recommend doing this.
