@mrs. bird: thank you for your input! I was definitely planning to make it a paid trial. I just wasn't sure how much I should hover. I will definitely show her around and then let her take over. I'm kinda looking forward to the break I'll get. I'll be able to get some stuff done around the house.

when i've done trial days (i helped hire my replacement & for another job helped to hire a part time girl to cover hours i didn't want), i've done a bit of both leaving them & being with them. i think it's best to pay for your trial day, then you don't have to feel bad for letting them do work. most of what you're going to get out of it is whether you're comfortable with her & if you like they way she interacts with you and LO. interacting with you is a huge part of the job, make sure you get along & like each other!

my suggestion would be that you spend the first part of the day showing her how you do things, where things are, talk about what you've tried/what has worked and what hasn't/ what you want to take place & what you don't, not to micromanage, but because she doesn't know you and that helps her to understand your family & what your goals are. give her chances to talk or make suggestions, even if you aren't interested in taking them, it will show you what she knows and if she is willing to take initiative or if she needs more direction and if the levels of each are what you're comfortable with. then use the afternoon to let her take over, make sure you provide a written tentative schedule & routines, but for the most part tell her just to carry about as if you aren't there, but of course if she has any questions or needs help to find you, then go do laundry, take a shower, clean, do something & let her do her thing. see how long it takes her to calm the baby if he gets upset, if she gets frazzled, what she does during awake time with LO. hopefully you'll get a better idea of who you mesh with and who you LO seems to mesh with. good luck!!

I'm in the process of hiring a nanny right now to watch my son when I go back to work next month. I was going to have my top 2 applicants come and do a trial day with DS before I make my final decision.

When you held a trial with a nanny, what did you do during the trial? I'm planning to be home while she's here. Do I hover around her or give her space and hang out in another room and step in only of need be?

Did you hold a trial day before hiring a nanny? How did it go?
