I think that it's fairly common to room-in, and encouraged. I don't know for sure though, since we plan on a free-standing birth center where you stay with your baby and go home the same day.

DH and DD roomed in with me during the day but went to the nursery at night (my request). The nurses brought her back every 2 hours to nurse then came and took her back to the nursery.

He was with us during the day but at night we put him in the nursery. They'd bring him to us every 2 hours or so whenever he woke up to nurse.

It was so funny, Wagon Sr. told me every night there was this big traffic jam of baby bassinets outside the nursery as all the dads waited in line to get the babies into the nursery for the night. Hehe.

I was in labor for 24 hours (5am - 5am) without sleeping the night before so I definitely needed and appreciated the rest.

Initially I thought I would want DS with me no matter what. But after a long labor, a long day with visitors, and DH falling dead asleep in the second bed in our room, I eventually sent DS to the nursery. Figures he picked then to scream inconsolably and they brought him back to me 20 minutes later. I go no sleep that night at all, and we ended up leaving early the next day to go home. I had DH and my parents to help.

I think the baby was with us all day but they took her at night so I could get some rest and then brought her back in for feedings. I took advantage of that since I figured I would not get much rest once I got home!

We had the option to send the baby to the nursery. I had a private room, so I wasn't worried that my son and I would keep someone else awake, but I did send him for a few hours one night. I was unable to even sit up to pick him up if he cried, so I'd have to ring the nurse anyway to have her come in.

We didn't have the option of family rooming in...dad had to sleep at home.

The only other option besides our room was if the baby needed to stay in the NICU for health reasons. They didn't have the staff for a healthy baby nursery. I really like that things have moved in this direction!

It seemed more of the norm at the hospital I was at for the babies to sleep in the nursery, or at least there seemed to be a lot of babies in there when I'd go in there. My husband slept at home since we only live a few minutes away and they only provided uncomfy chairs for him to sleep in. So both nights I ended up taking her to the nursery around 1 am or so so I could fall asleep without being nervous. They'd bring her back around 4 am to nurse and then she stayed in my room after that.

I don't know the norm at my hospital, but my mom told me to not be ashamed to have the baby stay in the nursery if I was tired. She was like, "you will have plenty of time with that baby, so make sure you get some rest." It's okay.

Who knows what we will do when we get there.

We had the option to room with her and before I had her I would have sworn up and down that we would have kept her with us. But, when she finally arrived, i was BEAT! We took advantage of the nursery and tried to get some rest. We did very little sleeping anyway, but we have her forever so I didnt mind squeezing in those last minutes of alone time.

They didn't offer to take her to the nursery, which is good because I wanted her with me. They did take her for her bath, and her body temp got too cold and skin on skin wasn't helping so they went to go warm her up for a couple of hours. I used that time to go take a walk and see her :)

Our hospital doesn't allow the baby to be sent to the nursery unless there's a medical reason. DS had to be under the bililights for the first three days of his life, and they even do that in the mother's room. Personally, I prefer rooming with my babies anyway. I would miss them too much to send them to the nursery!
