We started working on names after my anatomy scan and had a short list which we shared with close family. We left our family with the impression that we weren't choosing until we met her but we had in fact picked a name around 32 weeks. Middle name was always going to be Lee boy or girl (its my husband and grandfather's middle name) so it was only the first name that was a surprise but I didn't want to hear any specific opinions.

Yes, absolutely. We found out LO was a girl at 12 weeks, and the night we got the call I suggested a combination of variations of family names to DH that he loved, and that was that. We told everyone pretty much immediately, as I was having a difficult pregnancy and being able to speak about LO by name was really helpful to me during that time.

(luckily the name really fit her once she was born!)

Yes, sort of. I wasn't sure about DD1's name and was ready to come up with something different, but it turned out DH's suggestion fits her perfectly.

And we didn't have a middle name for DS at all - he was just not going to have one, but it came to me right as DH was filling out the papers  With the other kids, we just followed the same middle name pattern.

We had a name, but didn't tell anyone and didn't "make the call" until about half an hour after she was born. But the nurses told me I was the only person on the recovery floor that had a name for their baby. There were 5 others still deciding, so in my experience, it was super common to take time figuring it out.

@GoGoSnoGirl: The hospital department that handles filing social security paperwork called my room every hour on the hour from 8am-5pm while we were there until we had a name. So obnoxious, and like you I really doubt we are the only ones that didn't have a name right away.

I knew what name I wanted, but technically we went into it deciding to wait to see DD before deciding on her name. I was annoyed our nurses all gave us a hard time for waiting until DD was 24 hours old before giving them her name. We cannot be in that small of a minority that they would make such a big deal over it.

Similar to some others, we had first choices for both girls (middle names were established and wouldn't have changed even if we chose backups for first names) along with a backup or two when we went to the hospital. We went with our first choice for both of them!

We walked in with a top 3 of paired first/middle names for both kids. When DD was born though, she just wasn't any of the top 3. I made DH call and tell unmarried SIL that we were stealing her "saved" name (spelled differently) because that was the only one that fit when we saw her.

@Corduroy: I did this too! I was feeling awesome after giving birth and said, 'yes he'll be [DH's name]' but a week later I kind of wished I'd picked my name lol.

Both kids were named prior to arrival. My son has a family name and we had a back-up in case he couldn't pull it off (sorry, DS). Luckily he could :silly: . With my daughter, the L&D nurse kept calling her a similar name in recovery and there was a good 48 hour period where I was super confused regarding what we had named her.

Naming is stressful, but I've never met someone without one so I guess it always gets figured out.

@mediagirl: Congratulations on your impending arrival! We found out our second baby was a girl at 20 weeks (first was a boy), and spent the next 15 weeks arguing about names 😬. We had it down to a short list of 3, which my husband then threw out about two months before she was born. I was tearing my hair out and joked with our OB that he'd get the second vote in the operating room! Luckily, we finally agreed on her name with 4 weeks to spare. It suited her perfectly when she arrived, thankfully, but I truly feel your pain. It was so, so stressful! At the end of the day, you're the one who handled the pregnancy and is birthing the baby, so you get to pick (in my unbiased opinion  ).

@petitenoisette: I still don’t love my second daughter’s name as much as the first. I love it and it suits her, but I have a favorite girl name and I used it first. Sometimes I feel a little bad about it. Poor second child.

I voted no, but it was yes the first time (decided when I was 7 months pregnant) but the second, we had a lot of trouble. We didn’t even really discuss names for the longest time. When I went into labor we had it narrowed down to two names which we both liked and each of us had flip flopped on which was our favorite. When she was born the nurse asked what her name was and we just sort of looked at each other and knew which one it was!

That being said, it took me a while to love the name as much as I loved our first, but that was just bc I hadn’t had as much time to get attached to it I think. It’s perfect now!

Nope. DD was going to be Margaret, but she was obviously not Margaret when she came out. DS was going to be named after DH, but he wasn't a little DH, so we went with my favorite boy name I thought I'd never get to use.

We had a boy name for sure. We had 3 girl names and it was a game-time decision.
We ended up having a boy so luckily we didn’t have to stress about choosing!

DS1 was a different name for about 4 hours before we realized it just wasn’t him, so we changed it to another favorite on our (very short) boy name list. It’s now the name of one his favorite little buddies.

DS2 was nameless for a good day and a half as DH and I were literally googling boy names until we finally settled on the only one we’d been able to agree on the whole pregnancy. I love it for him now.

I still have about 14 girl names we’ll probably never get to use!

We decided on her name a couple weeks after we found out she was a girl. And we told everyone the name as soon as we decided. Luckily, when she was born we knew we had made the right choice (we had narrowed it down to two very different names, and chose the "spunky" name of the two and it just fits her).

@momlovescoffee: same here for DD1! for DD2 we had decided on a boy's name, but were still arguing between 2 for the girl's name. I was too tired to argue after I gave a 14 hour unmedicated birth so we went with DH's choice. Thankfully I'm super happy we went that way--it fits her great and works well with the girls' last name!

LO1, son: Name picked out together 5 years before he was born.
LO2, daughter: Name picked out by me 10-15 years before she was born (started off as Julia around age 10, morphed into Juliana around age 15); luckily husband agreed :)

They seem to fit the connotations of their name very well, thankfully!

Both times we had a list of three options, with one "this is probably going to be it" choice, and the other two as backups in case the baby didn't FEEL like our first choice. Both times we went with our first choice. The first time the middle name was set no matter what (it was my Papa's name, as well as the middle name of my brother, my husband, and my father-in-law), the second time the middle name depended on the first name.
