@Foodnerd81: interesting. I never had meconium I was just guessing. Honestly my labor was so fast I didn't mind laboring in bed.

@JenGirl: @BandDmommy: yes I got in the water after my water had broken, with meconium, but it had just broken within the last hour so the risk of infection was significantly lower I'm sure.

I did early on at home when I still thought I was just having Braxton hicks. The fact that they kept getting worse instead of better was what had me really thinking it might be real (though it took seeing blood in the water for me to really believe it). So the tub didn't help me, and there was no time at the hospital (and they wouldn't have let me any way since they were just about to send me for a c-section when she started crowning).

I did! I was also induced with cytotec...There was a jet tub at the hospital I was at. I got in the tub at 2.5cm was in there for about 4 hours. Contractions started getting really intense and it was time to get checked but I didn't want to get out! The nurse had to convince me and when I got checked I was at a 7.5cm. I made it to 7.5 cm without an epi... I ended up caving and getting one but I think if I was allowed to stay in the tub longer I could have made it without one. It all went really fast from then on. I also had a super quick delivery. I feel like the tub really helped me relax and made it easier for me to progress.

@JenGirl: it may vary a lot when (how far along you are) your water breaks and if you have meconium.. But I know that you have 24 hours before potential risk of infection.. I think it's a patient by patient basis... Or even OB preference

I stood and later sat in the hot shower. SO HELPFUL. I didn't try a bath, but would like to labor in the tub next time if I have the option. I think you should be able to take a shower even with the IV, they would just keep it outside the curtain.

FWIW I labored in bed the whole time, and it did not bother me. My water broke, and I had constant monitoring, so I had to stay in bed, except going to the bathroom, but I did not find that I wanted to get up and move. I was tired from waking up at 2 am. I did not find labor before my epidural particularly painful, and I got a planned epidural.

I did, and it didn't seem to help that much per se, but at some point they kicked me out -- not sure why, I guess you're not supposed to stay in for too long? -- and then I felt way worse. So it must have helped!

I found the tub annoying because the water felt lukewarm, and it wasn't deep enough to cover my shoulders. So I was really cold unless I laid down at this weird angle to fully submerge. But I had a heplock and had to keep my arm out of the water. So I was in this awkward position the whole time.

I really wanted to, but wasn't allowed as my water had been broken 24 hrs + and I had to have antibiotics through the drip and constant fetal monitoring. They wouldn't even let me shower either, I was mega disappointed!

Yes, and it's what got me my natural birth. During early labor I kept telling myself too get to the point where I could get into the tub, just stick it out. Then during transition I didn't think I could do it, but the tub saved me, because at some point it occurred to me that if I wanted an epidural I'd have to get out of it. Which I just was not willing to do.

@blackbird: Yes! I was able to go in the tub with my induction. I had to keep the IV arm out of the water but they had water proof wireless monitors for the baby.

@bluestriped bee: Definitely ask and see what they say! I was in the tub after my water broke but it had only been broken for a short period of time.

@wonderstruck: This was the next day, but I actually did ask the nurse "Is it okay if I'm bleeding everywhere?" and she said it was fine. Magically I did not notice any blood in the water though, actually. Though that could be because I was blissed out on percocet.

@sslm: Yes, we seem to be rare! They asked if I wanted it the second time around and I was basically like, "Well, I guess it can't hurt to try in case I have a different experience, but my expectations have been seriously lowered." LOL. I was expecting some miracle pain relief the first time - like you said, they were way too high! lol

It was offered to me but my labor was progressing too quickly and it was already time to push. I had had IV antibiotics for GBS and my water had already broken, so they were clearly okay with me being in the jacuzzi under those circumstances though.

Now when the nurse offered me to get in the jacuzzi the day AFTER I gave birth, and after I had taken two percocet, now that was the most amazing feeling in the wooooorld. :D I stayed in there over an hour. I felt like I was on a cloud.
