I majored in physics, but minored in math. DH is an engineer and both my parents are accountants, so we all have that math bug. I even love now when DH comes home with a problem and I can break out some old math skills. I did love calculus though. My degree was heavily math focused and I found that I liked things that were heavily based in numbers and did not like logic or graph theory very much. I was soo bad at it compared to all the Kumon kids in my class. Things turned around in middle school/high school when it was less arithmetic & memorization. I actually skipped 2nd grade into 3rd, but ended up being held back into 3rd again the next year because I couldn't do 3rd grade math. I had a HS teacher that just meshed well with me and she made the classes I had with her not so bad. I always understood what she taught but I was still not great at it. I was good at it but found it utterly boring. It wasn't until my final year of High School that I had a teacher who made it interesting. It is one of the reasons I am so passionate about mathematics education as an adult. We often present it really, really badly. Either as too hard, extremely boring, or both. They're going to have a big advantage over my generation, with all the iPad apps and websites for math out there these days. Why in my day we had to learn math with nothing but flashcards walking uphill in the snow both ways! Did you like math growing up?
