@mediagirl: Yes, we have the lunchbag too! She loves that it matches her backpack and easily fits her bento box as well

We ended up going with the large PBK backpack for K (LO is 44", 45lbs). It's HUGE and I'm still kind of debating taking it back.

@NorthStar: I just got the Lands End lunchbag I ordered for her and it is perfect! It's roomy enough for the bento box, plus more and has a side pocket for a drink.

@PinkElephant: and for the smaller Lands End bag, like I said, it's good sized. My daughter is only 34 lbs and not very tall, so it was actually pretty big on her. It's definitely not small!

@PinkElephant: she will be able to use it again for 1st grade as well - when DS was in 1st grade he only had a folder and a notebook - so I know it will fit =)

@NorthStar: Thanks, I will look! I had LL Bean growing up, but I didn't like any of their junior backpack prints/colors for DD2 this year.

@Mamaof2: Thanks! Yes, my kids are small and I feel like by the time the large would fit them, they'll want to choose a different color/print bag, and I'll be more than fine with that. I'm not trying to buy something for them to "grow into", just something to last through maybe 1st grade. :)

@Littlebit7: @charlotte: Once I saw a pre-k bag in person, I was so glad I'd paid attention to what they were able to fit in the bag in the photos on the site - those things are TINY! They seriously look like our skip-hop lunch bags.

Can I add that it's also really annoying that the skip hop bags that are so popular really won't fit a folder (or if someone wants to prove me wrong and say theirs loosened up to fit a folder, please chime in!!)

@MamaG: I'm so glad we don't need to fit binders in prek/k, but I'm afraid we might in first grade!

I bought DS a large when he started K and it was HUGE!!!! It fits him now at almost 9

For DD I went with small and it was perfect! Held her one folder and lunch bag she took everyday - side pockets held water and snack

I am just going to throw this out there, but consider looking at Lands End too. Their quality is really good and my preschooler used the smaller bag last year. It was perfect and holds a lot. It's still in good condition, so she will be using it in Kindergarten as well. I've also heard that LL Bean is great because of their warranty (lifetime).

We use the large because ours needs to hold a binder starting in PreK. It's big on her, but the right size for her things.

@Littlebit7: aw! we were sort of shocked and laughing when it came and as you know a folder won't work ... but we also tried to get as much use as we could and it was fine. Snack, water, and a few little things he worked on at school worked just fine. 😁 And they can easily carry it themselves!

@charlotte: ah I wish I had seen this earlier. Def bought (and monogrammed) the prek one for my toddler. Yep it's small. I guess it is proportional to her size right now but yeah it doesn't fit much. Thankfully she should get two years out of it...this year she leaves before lunch and next year (fingers crossed) public prek will provide lunch so I hopefully can make it work. Ugh. It's SO cute though. But I got it on major clearance so can't shed too many tears.

I'll mention for anyone thinking about going smaller - wth the preK size - that it is SO SMALL! I ordered it for my son for preK 3 and when it came he said "is this my lunch bag?" We ended up still using it for bringing epi pen to activities and a few papers home from school but it is so little. Love the quality and design though so will follow this thread and do a bigger one (likely size small) this year.

@PinkElephant: Yes. Folder. snacks. random letters. water bottle on outside. I could stuff the retro lunchbag in if I wanted but that was tight. Also I showed LO how to put the folder on the flatter side of the backpack closer to the back so it fits better.

LO is very petite and the small worked out best for her. She grew a bunch this year and now is the size of an average kindergartener but now entering first grade. She is using the same small backpack. The PB quality is great and I got a dark color so it still is good to go. A few months into kinder I gave in and bought the matching lunchbox.

If you had a Pottery Barn kids backpack for your LO in either preschool or kindergarten, did you end up liking it in terms of size? I bought a small MacKenzie Backpack for DD1 (Kindergarten) because she needed something that fits a regular folder....but honestly the fit of the folder seems a little tight. I'm wondering if I should buy DD2 (who needs a similar bag that fits a folder for pre-K at the same school, bc her current Skip Hop bag absolutely doesn't meet that requirement) a different bag. But they're tiny girls, so I'm trying not to end up with something ginormous. Thanks!

ETA: Folder, not golfer. we will not be packing golfers in our school bags. Thanks, autocorrect. 🙃
