Looking back, I think it it could have been kind of fun. However, I LOVED having my own apartment... and it was right across the street from campus, so it was still like I lived on campus. I would be totally fine with my children living in a dorm. First, I roomed with a girl I already knew from junior high. It wasn't all rainbows, but we already got along fairly well from the get-go. She's one of my best friends today. Second, we lived in apartment style dorms and only shared a bathroom with two other girls, both of which were very clean. I eventually became a resident advisor and a hall director and I got so many perks, including free dorms. I loved it and hope LO gets to do the same. It made it really easy to meet people and make friends and broaden my horizons with my living situation. I didn't like the first semester because my roommate sucked! My next 3 roommates were cool, so I didn't mind sharing a room. Also, my school had suites, so I only had to share a bathroom with 3 other people. (2 suites were connected by one bathroom) My last two years, I had a single. So that was nice. </p> <p>Yeah, I don't have a problem with dorms. I loved it most of the time. My dorm was an all girls dorm in a brownstone walk up. There were only two of these on campus. Otherwise, they had the regular huge coed dorms. My first year roommates were great. My second year, my good friend and I asked to room together, but we also got stuck with a third roommate, who was super annoying. After that year, I moved off campus. I moved into a 2 bedroom apartment with my best guy friend our first year of college &amp; we got along great. We actually ended up lviing together a couple years later again. My second year I moved into a hosue with 3 girls, that only lasted a couple months, too much estrogen and questionable morals for me. Although I didn't get along with my freshman roommate, I met some of my closest friends in that dorm, and feel like it's a big part of college life! My room was really tiny, right across from the bathrooms...gross. My roommate also decided she hated me during spring semester, so it was just a really horrible place to live. My sophomore year was so, so much better just because I had my own bedroom and bathroom in the apartment I shared with my friend.</p> <p>I think I will want my kids to live in a dorm for their first year, though--I will just do a lot of research and help them try to get into a good one. I lived with a friend that I'd known forever (we weren't really close, but ended up becoming best friends) and our other friend lived just down the hall. We lived in one of the newest dorms (only 2 or 3 yrs old) and it was really nice. I didn't mind it- it was actually a lot of fun!</p> <p>The next 2 years of college (I graduated in 3 years), I lived with those same 2 friends plus another girl in an on-campus apartment. I was in a girls dorm where each room was for 2 people and there were two communal bathrooms per floor. I had no problem with it but the second year I was blessed with a decent roommate. I hated it. I did get a really nice dorm. It was clean, and I didn't have to share a bathroom wtih the whole floor, just 3 other girls. But of course the other girls NEVER cleaned it, even after we made a weekly schedule. </p> <p>And I always got random roommates who were pretty awful. The first I just had nothing in common with and was a slob. And she was pretty rude, I'd be watching tv and she'd come in and put on the radio so I couldn't hear. Why can't she just ask me if it's ok, and I'd put on headphones or something? The next dealt drugs. I told her I didn't feel comfortable with drugs in our room, but she obviously didn't care what I thought. And she had sex with her bf when she thought I was sleeping. Gross!</p> <p>So I'm not so sure if I want LO in a dorm. I survived it though, so if she wants to live the dorm life, I'll let her too. </p>
