Very interesting! My hospital is among several other top hospitals in Chicago that are all rated on the worse end of the scale.

The only area hospital rated on the Better end is West Suburban, which has am alternative birth center. I started out with a midwife group who practices there, but it wasn't right for me. My friend delivered there recently, but had a csection due to a failed induction. You never know what can happen, I guess.

The state I delivered in isn't on there, but it has one of the lowest c-section rates in the area. I delivered there because that's where my midwife delivers. There is a hospital in my state that has a 100% c-section rate, so I would have avoided delivering there (it's a rural hospital).

No, I didn't feel strongly about avoiding a c-section.

My mother had c-sections and I kinda figured I would too (I did). I picked an OB I trusted and went from there.

Nope, I didn't care as long as I ended up with a healthy baby.

It says mine is worse, but both doctors I had really worked hard to have me avoid the ER. I'd need to see more details about how they made their decisions on these hospitals since most of the hospitals in my state are designated as "worse."

@bluestriped bee: yes! There are two hospitals very close to me and I chose the one I delivered at because it has a lower c section rate and a higher rate of med-free deliveries. By quite a bit!

Nope, but I agree that it's probably hard to interpret. I imagine the C-section rate at a hospital with facilities that draw a higher amount of higher risk pregnancies (multiples, etc.) would garner more C-sections because of their clientele. I chose the hospital with the best NICU because I didn't know what we would be needing early on. I really feel like a doc's C-section rates would matter to me more than the hospital's.

That consumer reports ranking seems to have some flaws. As many momma's have noted, having high level NICUs and specialties in high-risk patients will increase C-section rates. The hospital I'm delivering at is one of few area hospitals that encourage VBAC, which I assume also increases C-section rates. I think looking at overall stats of local hospitals (policies on induction, episiotomy rate, policy on when you are admitted, NICU level, infection level, etc) are more useful than a single ranking

No but I also think its hard to interpret. I worked at a hospital that cared for a lot of high risk OB pts so that population as a group had more csections and thus increased the rate of the hospital as a whole. So mostly I just wanted an OB I could trust!

ETA: things I did care about - NICU level available, and time from decision to baby out for a crash csection (should at least be less than 10 min).

I looked and started my search for a provider based on the OBs who delivered at that particular hospital.
We moved and I will deliver my second at a different hospital. The new hospital has a higher c-section rate, but it is also the biggest hospital in the area and has the highest rated NICU unit. As a result, I expect their c-section rate to be high because they get sent most of the complicated cases. This is just to say, that rates should be looked at in context.

Like I mentioned on the other thread about hospitals, the only midwives in my city only work out of one hospital, so I didn't have a choice. Also, my hospital is the best in the city, with the best NICU, so I would expect it to have higher c-section rates. It's more likely to be chosen by women with high risk pregnancies.

I don't overall find this very useful.

A) whether my doctor had a higher rate would matter more to me than the hospital
B) still have to take A with a grain of salt - what kind of patients does your doctor see? Are they taking more high risk patients that are more likely to get sectioned? Or do they have a baseline low risk practice ?

Overall I still think finding the right provider for you is so much more important than the particular hospital?

My OB only delivers at one hospital so I didn't even look. I ended up with a scheduled c-section anyway because my little peanut flipped breech at 38 weeks.

Like some other ladies said, there is one hospital in my area that has a really impressive NICU, so high-risk mamas deliver there, which drives up the c-section rate.

I switched to a midwives practice at about 16 weeks because I was unhappy with my OB and thought midwives would be a better fit (they were!). I looked at the c-section rates at the hospital where they deliver as well as the rates for their practice. Ultimately my choice was based on provider not hospital.

Nope, i asked my dr for hers. I think hospital can give you skewed results. A hospital with a very high rated nicu may, by default, have more c-sections due to having more high risk deliveries anyways. For instance, the local best NICU hospital has a 45% some odd c-section rate, I think? But...that makes sense! I chose a hospital with only a level 2.

Rates vary so much by provider that I didn't care what the overall hospital rate was -- just what my specific provider group's stats were.

@bluestriped bee: I think there's one free-standing birth center in Seattle proper and at least one on the Eastside, and I think another somewhere south of the city. But a couple of the hospitals have midwife practices and hospital setups that function sort of like a birth center (including the one I delivered at). IMO, it was the best of both worlds because the hospital was very accustomed to low-intervention and med-free births, but if I had needed a C-section, transfer of care would have been immediate and there was an OR literally next door to my room.

I live close to the border of two states. When we looked up c-section rates, we realized that one hospital across the bridge In the other state had a c-section rate more than half that of the hospital at which I was intending to birth. We switched practices and hospitals.
