I measured on track with both babies.

With DS1, they estimated him to be 7-8 pounds. He was over 9.

With DS2, they just said "you had a big baby last time, so this one will be big too". He was 7 lbs 9 oz.

@mediagirl: from my experience and all my friends, I don't think doctors can accurately predict the size of the baby. I don't think technology is good enough for in utero assessments. They told me the baby was over 6 pounds and he was born 3 days later 5lb 12oz. My belly bump was accurate; on the small side for a smallish baby.

@T.H.O.U.: it's funny - I had growth ultrasounds with both kids fairly frequently bc of GD, and both times the estimates were really off...with LO1 they guessed 7.5-8lbs and she was 5lbs 8oz, and with LO2, they put her at 7-7.5lbs and she was 5lbs 15 oz!

I have no idea! My midwife always measured fundal height and would smile sand say "looks good!" but she never said if I measured big or small. I asked once and she said I was doing great and that they didn't tell moms more than that so as to not stress them out. I gained at the high end of normal and my LO was just shy of 7 pounds.

DD1 - fundal height measured 3-4 weeks behind, ultrasound measured 1 week ahead. Came on her own at 38 weeks weighed 6lbs 14 oz

DD2 - fundal height measured 1-2 weeks behind, ultrasound measured 1 week behind. Induced at 38+5 and she was 6lbs 7oz.

I recently wrote about how I think "measuring" is variable because there are a few ways to measure.

Fundal height - very variable
Regular u/s - more accurate but still could be off
Growth measurement ultrasound - pretty accurate because they measure head, belly, femur each three times.

I measured pretty on track up until 20 weeks. 20 weeks was my last u/s. From there they just measured belly growth and the estimation from that. WHICH WAS FAR OFF. Went into labor expect about a 7 1/2 lbs or so baby. She came out NINE POUNDS!!!!

@meganmp: My doctor stopped telling me how big I was measuring at a certain point because it was scary. I think by 28 weeks or so I was measuring 40 weeks and I just couldn't imagine what I'd be like at the end. I didnt gain much weight the 3rd trimester though, so maybe it evened out a little at the end!

My kids were estimated a little over 6.5 lbs a week before I was induced at 38 weeks and one ended up 4 lb 15 oz and the other was 5 lb 15 oz. so I have a hard time believing the estimates! But one of my friend's daughter was estimated at 5 lb 15 oz at her 37 week appt. three days later she was born and she weighed 5 lb 15 oz. that redeemed my faith in the estimates a little!

I measured normal and up to 2 weeks ahead. I don't think I ever measured small. I was overdue and had an ultrasound at 40w and they estimated 7lbs 12oz. She was 7lbs and 4oz a week later (41w when I gave birth) so it was off a bit. I am 6' and both DH and I were over 8lbs so I was expecting a slightly bigger baby but even I was wrong lol.

I wouldn't put much stock into any estimated measurement.

I measured on track every week. My baby was over 9 pounds at two weeks late. I had a late ultrasound at 41.5 and she was predicted to be 9.5 and she was 9.14, so pretty close. I didn't think she would be that big because she always moved around a lot.

I measured on track, but didn't gain much until the end. Doctors thought baby would be small and wanted me to do additional growth ultrasounds. I declined. My belly was growing, baby and I were both healthy. She was born at 40 +3 at just shy of 8 pounds.

I measured small and didn't gain a lot of weight. My Dr estimated baby's weight to be in the 6 lb range, but he came out 8 lb 5 oz. I think his positioning affected how I looked (he came out sunny side up).

I measured small with DD. Ultrasound estimated that she would be 8.5 - 9lbs by 40 weeks (turns out that's because her head is enormous) but my midwife guessed right on the money (estimated between 7.5 - 8.5 lbs at 40 weeks) by feeling baby through my belly. She was born 7lb 13oz at 39+6.

LO and I both measured small from the very first ultrasound. My doc actually argued with me about due dates from the very beginning because LO consistently measured 10 - 15 days behind. I did have some medical issues during my pregnancy, and I constantly got comments about not looking as pregnant as I was.

I was induced on my due date (low fluid), and LO was 6lbs 2oz when she was born. She's been in the 2nd-5th percentile consistently in all areas since birth, which is exactly how my mom and I both always measured! (We're a family of short ladies!)

I measured on track with DS#1 (never had an ultrasound past 20 weeks). He was born just before 39 weeks at 8lbs 3oz.

I'm currently 35 weeks with #2 and I'm measuring ahead. I've had frequent ultrasounds due to my previa and they are saying baby is in the 96%. Only time will tell if the measurements are accurate!

I'm also 5'9" so bigger babies aren't really surprising. My dad was supposedly 10 lbs at birth (3rd child). Eeek!

Do you think doctors can really predict the size of the baby before birth?
