I think so! Our situation was different, we didn't have new construction so we opted to do some work ourselves, but did it over a couple months before moving in.

We were living at my parents in between selling our town home and as we waited for our new construction to be built.

After closing, we had the keys and could move in but chose to slowly move in after we had the house more settled.

For example, we had to buy a refrigerator and it took 3.5 weeks for it to get to our house after we ordered it and with a small child, I wanted to have a refrigerator.

New construction also equals a lot of things that needed to be installed and done by husband and I before we moved in...like installing blinds, garage door, painting the garage floor, fans, toilet paper and towel holders, etc. I guess we could have done this after we moved in but it was so much easier to do it before we moved our stuff out of storage.

My LO1 was around 2.5 when we moved out of my parents. She was in a crib converted to toddler bed at my parents house but we bought a big girl bed, dressers, etc and had it all assembled and set up in her new room. We didn't even take the crib with us and it helped with the transition.

I moved in the day we closed. We bought an older home. The sellers wanted it a little longer but I said no. I wanted to move in! I feel a little bad about that but I had already made moving plans.

Oh I will add what others said about the closing date changing. If you are close to closing is should be more accurate but if you just bought and they are telling you 4 or 6 months or whatever be prepared for it not to happen that way. We bought a spec home that was 90% done when we found it so we did close on time but everyone else in our neighborhood who bought a lot and were along for the whole process of building from the ground up all ended up closing almost 2 months later than the expected closing date they gave them initially. My parents bought a new construction recently and were told end of August and now they are saying maybe september or october. I think its just dishonesty on the builders part, if they told people it would be 8-10 months instead of 4-6 they would probably loose buyers.

With a new construction you shouldn't have to worry about a lot of things other home buyers do like cleaning, repairs etc. We could have moved in the day we closed but didn't for a couple days just for schedule reasons. Congrats! Buying a brand new home has been awesome, we are loving it!

@Mrsbells: Congratulations! We built too! Closed April 3 and moved that weekend! There was about one day's worth of touch up painting and door handle installation to be done after closing but we ok'd that with the builder. What's your new place like?

Yup! We did the pre closing walk through the night before. Closing meeting was at 10am or something like that? We got the keys and brought the first load of stuff over that day!
We did the big move a few days later only cause we closed on a Monday and DH was working so we couldn't fully move in until the weekend. We just brought car loads of boxes over each evening after work.

We closed on our first house 2 weeks ago. We could have moved in right away, but we haven't yet because we don't have to be out of our apartment for a few more weeks.

We have been moving over slowly, and getting a few things done at the house before we move in completely. We had the carpet cleaned yesterday, and they gave us a discount because they didn't have to move any furniture.

I would confirm the house has passed the final inspection. I would imagine you could maybe close but not have the house be move in ready but hopefully not!

We did agree a rent back with the sale of our house which allowed us moving time!

You should get keys at closing. They should be done by then. I worked for a GC/developer and this is at least how they did things. We aren't moving in right away because we have contractors doing a little work on the house and we have our rental for another month, but we didn't buy new construction.

We moved a few days after closing, but went to the hous and started doing work immediately- like we signed the papers, dropped the kids off at a friend's, and started painting.

Like @kodybear: the house was ready earlier- not a new build but the sellers had moved out already- but the bank couldn't complete everything for the mortgage any sooner.

@Mrsbells: About a month before closing the sales guy said they finished the house earlier and could move us up by a week. But the loan processing couldn't close that fast although they tried. but every day they were waiting for something to be approved, like underwriting items. its probably not common for this to happen. this was our second new construction and the first one didn't have any issues.

With the house that we sold, we leased it back from the new owners for 4 days. We were moving to Wisconsin from Texas and we didn't want to have our whole lives loaded up in a truck and have something go wrong at closing.
With the house we bought in WI, we drove right over to the house after leaving the bank. We slept in the house that night.

Yes, after you close you can move in. We had a new construction too though, and the closing date kept changing. FIrst it moved up by a week or so, then it kept getting delayed, and ended up closing on our original date. :-/ It was annoying, we had to keep rescheduling the movers. so thats something to consider when picking a moving day.

Yep. We closed about an hour away from the house, but our realtor was actually at the house to let in people to lay new carpet and clean it as soon as the closing was done so it was ready for us to move in later that day.

Yes. There are some situations where sellers request to lease back the home for a week or so, but that is negotiated into the contract ahead of time. Since you are buying new construction you should get your keys at closing. If the house isn't ready they will likely push back the close date.

Not sure what to expect this is our first home buying experience, it is a new construction home and we have been given a closing date. Does that mean we can move in immediately after that day?
