i agree Starbucks is amazing. I was lucky enough to have a Starbucks in the hospital, so DH brought it everyday. My friends who visited me brought chocolate and I devoured it.

I can also say what you don't need: pink or blue stuffed teddy bears from the hospital gift shop!!! Luckily I only got 2, but anymore would have been overkill.

I would see if she is up for visitors yet. If so, ask her what food/snacks/drinks she wants. People brought and sent balloons, flowers and stuffed animals and, since we took a taxi home, it was hard to transport everything.

My friend sounds like yours. Rough labor and a C. She was in so much pain. I brought her some fancy bath products, scented lotion, and chocolates. She told me later I'm the only one tho brought HER something, versus stuff for the baby, and it meant a lot to her.

Starbucks would have been perfect, a giftcard to dinner somewhere to be used later, or food for the Mr would have been nice too. Although I appreciated all the visitors, the flowers and balloons were overwhelming. I donated all of our balloons and flowers to the nursery staff and L&D reception area on the day of discharge because we had so many things to carry. It was too far of a walk to the parking area to make multiple trips. I also rented a hospital grade breast pump so it was something extra to carry. The discharge nurse offered to carry the pump for me while she walked with us to the front entrance of the hospital. The Mr was carrying baby in the infant carseat and my overnight bag. He brought home all the other baby gifts the day before. I felt well enough to walk after a C-section so I didn't want to be in a wheel chair.

@wonderstruck: Yeah, I mentioned that because I had a really hard L&D and people came to visit without calling first. my husband had to turn them away before they got to my room. I was just in too much pain and too overwhelmed to deal with visitors.

Yes Starbucks and other baked goodies. My husband used these as rewards for me for gettig me to try movig around and stand and eventually walk after my c-section, and it worked!

Don't bring anything big or bulky as I got overwhelmed with how we were gonna take everything home after checking out from the hospital.

Our hospital food was really good, so snacks were not necessary, but would have been appreciated!

Good coffee/tea would have been awesome.

There was downtime for me being in the hospital after my c-section. Time when LO was asleep and there was really nothing to do, and I would have been excited to get some "activities". New, cute nail polish, DVDs, books, gossip magazines to read, nice lotion, etc.

We appreciated food and drinks! Also didn't have much room for flowers in the room but I really appreciated them at home. You could also see if she needs anything from her house. I had an emergency c section and had DH go home to get my some of his sweatpants because my yoga and maternity pants irritated my incision.

I agree with Starbucks or some other type of food/craving. Flowers and balloons are nice, but it was a PITA for us trying to get all that extra stuff home.

@grizz: Totally agree with calling and making sure she's up for visitors! By the time I gave birth to my little one at 7AM I had been awake for over 24 hours...and it was another 12 until I got any sleep because of a constant stream of visitors. It seemed like every time I thought I was finally going to get some sleep, someone else would show up. While I loved showing him off and was happy people were excited...I was also exhausted.

When you do call I'd ask if there's anything she's been craving - I remember wanting a burger from my favorite place so bad but feeling bad asking anyone to bring it, and I didn't want my DH to leave.

I would check and make sure she's up for visitors. If she is, my sister brought a fruit tray to our room and I demolished it. I also liked flipping through magazines while the baby slept. And COFFEE!

A close friend just had her baby, yay!

We were thinking of visiting her while in the hospital.

Should we just wait? We didn't mind visitors but I know everyone has a personal preference (:

Now, the real question:
If we do visit, should we take anything?
Flowers? Balloons? Gift for the baby?
She had a pretty rough labor and we just want to take something to lift her spirits (as if the baby weren't enough :) ). Also, since she had a cesarean it will require 3 days minimum hospital stay, maybe she needs something to snack on? Kill time while baby sleeps? I don't know. Any suggestions?

Thanks (:
