Yeah, night training is kind of a myth, imho. In that you can't really 'train' them as you might be able to during the day - it's purely physiological. My 3 year old has been trained for nearly a year, and she still has night time accidents every few weeks. Honestly, we're the ones who need training - if we'd just remember to be firm about making her pee if she wakes at night, it wouldn't ever be a problem.

In May (about 6 months in) I was ready to pull night time diapers as she was waking up fairly consistently dry. Then we went on vacation. It's been highly inconsistent since then, with diapers wet more than dry. We are currently working on 7 days dry before changing over to underwear. I'm not sure how this will work out, but today was day 5. This is the longest stretch we've had dry since May!

Like @looch: I haven't been able to just bite the bullet and be done. I don't have the time to deal with a wet bed every morning. As it is/was, her diapers were leaking and I was having to change sheets nearly twice every week regardless.

Nope, we just day trained and fully expected her to have wet overnight diapers for a long time after. But a few weeks after being day trained she started waking up with dry diapers!

We day trained but not night and naps a month ago. Once he's dry for naps consistently, we'll move to night training. Last night before bed, he wet his undies as he told us. It was random compared to how good he is normally. He's a little over 2 years old.

We didn't night train. I was fully prepared to do night diapers for years. But, within about 3 weeks of potty training, DS was waking up dry every day. We completely ditched diapers about 2 months after we trained him.

No! We day trained when DD was 2.5... she is still wearing pull-ups to sleep and she's turning 4 in 2 more months!! At first we decided to wait bc she had a regression and we wanted to get day training squared away first. Plus, she was still waking up with a pretty heavy pull-up!

Then, we ended up having them share a room, and the idea of night training her and possibly waking up DS deterred us.

My SIL is moving out at the end of the month, so once she moves out we will put them in separate rooms temporarily just for night training purposes.

Has anyone by chance night trained while the sibs occupied one shared room?

@Bao: no problem! :) honestly it is more about when WE are ready than it is about them. Psych yourself up and dive in. (I was SO sick of washing cloth for two and we had travel plans coming up that I really didn't want to lug around so many diapers, so that was my motivation). :goodluck:

We night trained at the same time. There wasn't much to do besides limiting liquids after dinner and making sure she went to the potty right after waking up for the day. It was a bit of a drag having to go to her as soon as I heard her wake up, but now I know she can hold it for 10-30 minutes after waking so she will play a bit in her room and then go pee. I did get a mattress protector though just in case and she wears thicker underwear at night than her usual daytime undies.

So, in our case, I still have my son in pull ups at night. He's 4 soon and mostly dry in the mornings, but there are occasions when he does wake up wet, and as a working mom that has to get out of the house at 6:30am, I don't have time to deal with bed changing mid week.

@Bao: We started potty training at the end of March. She still wet or pooped in her night and nap diapers consistently until July. She has been mostly dry since August so I think I need to pull the plug...I'll let you know how it goes tonight. FX! I just waste disposable diapers right not but I guess I could find a larger cloth diaper cover for her to use at night with a prefold or flat CD.

DD has been day trained for about 7 months but she still wears diapers at night. She stopped wearing them for naps about a month ago. She still pees a lot at night so we aren't there yet. Just recently she has said she wants to wear her big gitl pants to bed but I don't think she is ready.

@Bao: ya, I changed a lot A LOT of sheets those first couple of months. One thing some people have success with is taking them to the potty half asleep before you go to bed, so around 11pm or so. That didn't really work for us though because the problem was always the early morning hour or two before he woke up. Limiting liquids as night helped a little but the thing that helped most was time...closer to 2.5 he could stay dry the whole night.

@Baby Boy Mom: I can see my LO being that way, once she can wear "big girl underwear" I know she is so stubborn/independent she won't want to wear the diapers anymore. This is one of the reasons why I asked this question, probably not worded the right way, but hoping LO can jump right into underwear at night, too, without me having to clean up a mess every morning :silly:

Once he was day trained he didn't want diapers at night anymore. It took a while longer for him to stay dry all night and we still have occasional accidents from time to time. But I know what our triggers are so it's basically my "fault".

Ok to clarify, for example my siblings just ditched all diapers with their kids, no night diapers at all and their kids wet the bed maybe once or twice. I have a few other friends going through potty training right now and they just put a diaper on their LO at night and they always wet it. So I guess maybe it's just coincidental as to how it worked out with these kids...clearly, I don't know how potty training works yet!

I don't know how to night train, so we didn't. Nearly a year later we are to the point where I'm hopeful we will get out of night diapers soon. We started training November 2013. We didn't do any specific method. We stayed in nap diapers for about 5 months, before we abandoned them. She will still occasionally have a nap accident at school. At home we limit her lunch drink and force the usage of the potty before nap.

I agree with others - I don't think you can night train - Like I told my DS "when you brain learns to say "wake-up wake-up its time to pee" then you can stop wearing diapers at night.

For both kids it happened on its own about 3 months after being day trained.

no, LO still wears a diaper at night. I think I can switch to undies because she wakes up dry almost every day. I tried it once last month and of course she had a big accident!

It wasn't training, just something she started doing. She even sleeps with a water cup!

We focused on having her use the potty before bed but we kept a diaper on her. She was still night nursing and would sometimes wake up dry, which we'd celebrate, but it was slower progress at night for us.

Or did you focus on day time potty training and then move to night potty training? I have heard of people doing it both ways, so I am looking to hear from you guys!

If you didn't night train at the same time as day training, what was your reasoning? And if you day trained and night trained at the same time, was it successful right away? What made you decide to go that route?
