My dog was marking everything right before we got him neutered (at 9 months) and that did stop. He still humps occasionally, but less than he did before he was neutered. I saw the biggest change in his behavior when he was about 2 years old, I think he had just outgrown a lot of that rambunctious puppy stuff.

@pui: I have a 5lb pomeranian and she was only about 3 lbs when she got spayed. She was fine. Because she was so small they had her on an IV of something to keep her sugar levels up! :)

I have heard stories all over the map!! Marking didn't stop, wildness didn't go away, humping didn't go away... but in general, when we neutered my male dog, he stopped humping (he never marked) and calmed down. BUT he was growing out of puppy-dom so it totally could have just been him calming down as well. In any case, it can't hurt, right?? Can only help to get all that testosterone out of his system..! :) And my pup was neutered with sutures and he was totally fine!! Never seemed to be in pain or sad! I think he was about a year old. Our girl who got spayed took quite a while to be back to her old self, but a spay is a total hysterectomy AND she had several teeth pulled as well.

I know it's coming to be time to get my little Leroy neutered and I'm nervous too! I'm also nervous because he's a small dog (7.5lbs) and I'm worried about putting him under... I'm sure he'll be fine, just worried.

Leroy is very gentle and not in the least bit aggressive now, but he does hump other dogs which I hope goes away.

@chopsuey: Oh my gosh! Yea thank goodness you don't have to keep him around your little ones! The smaller dogs like yours have really sharp teeth too. My MIL has a Pomeranian-Poodle so a little black fluffball (who is adorable!!!) But he sure has a temper on him when you do something he doesn't like....He's a little fire cracker, our big ab is even afraid of him!!!

@MrsBrewer: he's bitten so many people and broken so much skin. We've tried everything to get him to chill out, and he's gotten better, but still a mean dog that occasionally bites and snarls( Pomeranian). I'm really glad I left him in CA with my family, cause there's no way I'd keep him with 2 babies.

Hope your pooch does well and calms down post op! Lol.

@chopsuey: Oh no! I'm sorry your dog is still aggressive! Thankfully ours isn't he's just sooo hyper and wants to play and needs your attention 24/7! It's not too fun having an 85 lb dog jump on you!

@betsyboop: You know, I've heard of other dogs that have done that too! They pick up on things soooo quickly, almost like children!

@JerricaBenton: Thanks! I hope he heals quickly too!

Our pup was always very sweet natured and never marked. After neutering he just stopped humping. He healed really quickly. Good luck to your pup!

This is going to sound strange but our dog started marking AFTER he was neutered! And he started humping after he was neutered too, though this happened after we boarded him for a few days so I'm thinking he learned that behavior there. Same personality though!

Oh, but to answer your question, the marking stopped, but he's still wild and aggressive.. 7 years later! His personality didn't change :) :P

I regret not neutering my dog earlier. I waited until he was 2ish years old and man, he was marking all over the place and was so so so aggressive!

My poor pup is getting neutered on Thursday, and I'm the nervous mommy of course. Lol I know it needs to be done, and we waited (I wanted to wait 1 year, but this is close enough, he's just over 10 months)

We had the choice to get it done via laser instead of the traditional suture, which should hopefully decrease healing time.

I was wondering if you noticed changes in your dogs behavior after he was netered though. Right now he marks everything! Only outside thank goodness! He humps other dogs quite often (males and females, he doesn't have a preference  ) and he's veer rye hyper and jumps all over people!

I really hope this calms him down a little bit! I'm interested in hearing other people's experiences!
