i did because olive had to be kept in the warmer + jaundice, so i needed to pump milk for her. i was producing a ton of colostrum with the hospital pump, so that was great!

i would just use the hospital's pump if you do want to pump. one less thing to carry, and stronger than your own pump! did you have any supply issues last time?

i didn't bring my own pump - they asked if i wanted to pump and when i said yes, they lent me (free) hospital pump and let me keep the parts (and some extras)....

I started pumping on day #2 at the hospital. My LO did not want to breastfeed, and he only latched on a few times. The nurses and lactation consultant were able to guide me through the process of pumping, and it helped a lot. I ended up renting the hospital grade pump for a month.

@mamabolt: I was wondering if I would have time, too. I felt like I was already so busy in the hospital taking care of the baby and my vajayjay, as you called it!

@purrpletulips: I didn't realize that you had given birth (or did I? I have a bit of preggo brain). Congrats!!!

I had access to the pump before I delivered (for natural induction purposes) and donated the pumped colostrum to another mama on the floor (I had loads!) but didn't bother pumping after she was born. She happily munched on colostrum for 2 days until my milk came in.

Like @Krsmall, my baby was early and in the NICU so I began pumping the day after he was born. Our NICU had hospital grade pumps and a special pumping room for the moms. I wasn't able to transition to breastfeeding only until my little guy got to his due date.

I didn't either time. My milk came in on day 4-5 with DD without using my pump. This time around it is taking its sweet time (very frustrating) as I'm on day 7 and don't feel that it is fully in yet. DS can do a good latch but gets frustrated easily because my milk hasn't come in yet and slips to shallow so my nipples are SORE. I've tried pumping but it seems to only aggravate my already sore nipples; I'm exploring hand expressing to try and improve my supply.

I didn't bring mine, my milk came in on day 4 without any pumping. I feel like it would have just added another thing I had to do when I wanted to be trying to rest, I was having a hard enough time finding time to do a sitz bath for my poor vajayjay.

I wish I had brought my manual pump. It would have been nice to put in a little extra work while I was there. It took 5 days for my milk to come in and three of those were miserable. He was jaundiced, hungry and still couldn't pass his meconium all the way. We both spent 3 days crying.

I didn't both times. I wanted to for DD 2, but she was latching on about every 2 hours anyway and I trusted that I was feeding frequently and correctly enough to help my milk come in. When we got home on the afternoon of Day 2, my hospital grade pump rental was delivered, but I didn't use it too much. Turns out she was an excellent nurser and my supply was better than it was with DD 1.

@Mrs. Superhero: the size of a marble! they don't need to eat for a week.
and even when my milk came in late (almost 2 weeks!) my LO is just fine now. pumping actually caused problems and created over supply which lead to LO having latch problems

I didn't. I think that for the majority of women it'll just come in fine on it's own. We need to remember that newborns are just fine on colostrum for the first bit, their tummies are so tiny!

I think your hospital should have pumps and kits for you to use!! :-)
