@jholler25: You'll know what you feel most comfortable with when she gets here. Maybe you could borrow a bassinet to see? If you move her before 6 months, I wouldn't worry about it forming a habit, babies change every other day. Being able to lie in bed with your hand on them while they fall asleep is very preferable to falling asleep in the nursery, I think.

We used the pnp in our room for the first six months and will do it again for the next baby 4-6 months. It's a special time with your baby and it won't last forever. I would have been too paranoid to leave him in his room alone when he was so small! But do what seems right to you. BTW no place is a very special marital place when you have a newborn!

DS slept in his PNP for the first 4 months in our room. We would have transitioned him sooner into his crib in his room but it was really hot at night and the fan in our room was all we had so it was easier for the 3 of us to be in one room. He has transitioned perfectly fine and sleeps better now...sort of makes me wish we had moved him sooner. My mom is a very big proponent of the baby in their room in their own bed from day one and just couldn't understand why I wanted him in our room. It was just a comfort thing I guess. Honestly I don't regret having him in our room. Just wished we made the move sooner because DH And I sleep better with him in his own room too(he's a mover when he sleeps!)

I didn't vote because, we tried bassinet, dd rolled early and would get her face trapped against the side, so we started crib week 2, but she always has been and is still a crappy sleeper at 4.5 months. I think it depends on the child, if you have a naturally good sleeper I would think either is fine!

@jholler25 i was in a similar position! i couldn't decide what i wanted until he was here. i did have DH move the crib out of our room. a good friend of mine has 3 small children under 3 and convinced me to move it out and i'm glad i did. i came home from hospital and on night 1 i swaddled him and put him in the crib with blankets rolled up next to him so he wouldn't roll (he's a roller). sometimes it's been hard because as soon as i put him down he starts to cry...but i feel like in the long run his crib is the best spot for him. if it doesn't work out by the time it gets close for me to go back to work i figure i can get a rock and play or SOMETHING, there have been tons of suggestions here. honestly, i'm so tired at night that i don't even check on him at all unless he starts to whimper or cry for more than a few minutes. like pp, i thought about getting a blow up mattress to put in the room-sleeping in the glider-other things...but so far it hasn't been that bad.

you'll do great. just play it by ear and don't worry about it for now!

@jholler25: I think you should dowhatever works for you and your family. If you're more comfortable with the baby in the nursery, that's great.

But on the other hand your baby will be in their room a long time, and could be in their crib for 3 years or even more. A couple months out of that probably won't be a big deal.

Our plan is for LO to sleep in our heirloom bassinette, preferably in the nursery. We actually don't have a cot yet as my Dad is making it and it's not finished (LO is due in 3 weeks!).

Unfortunately we've just found out that Baby is breech, so if we end up needing a c-section the bassinette will most likely be shifted into our bedroom for at least the first few weeks.

I know a couple of people who've found that their newborn's don't sleep well in a crib as they're used to the confined space of the womb and the crib is just to big for them.

I stay w the kids right now. My hubby cant afford to keep waking up. Can't wait til I can wean the night feeds... Even though I stay w the kids, still use the monitor. Sometimes, they just move around and I didn't want to keep getting up. Also, got night vision so I can see kids in monitor better.

@jholler25: I don't think it is unrealistic, but I would be prepared that once your little girl is in front of you, you won't want he outside of arms reach for a while.

I also felt weird about all the time and effort spent in the nursery and for the monitor and such, but your baby will use it, even if they spend a few weeks in your room. There is something so helpless and special about your own newborn that it feels weird being any farther away from them that you absolutely need to.

So you guys can tell me if this is dumb...I feel like we have spent so much time and money on all of this stuff - like creating the perfect nursery with the crib I died for, and researching things like video monitors and forking out the dough for the best one (Motorola)....I feel like I should use all this stuff right away since we've invested so much time, energy, and money into it? Is that dumb?

And I'm scared of establishing bad habits...I kind of like the idea of our bedroom staying our bedroom. Our marital place. And that I should use our fancy baby monitor to know when she cries, and walk my extra-baby-weight self over to the crib I harassed DH for (burning extra calories), and take care of her there....Is that TOTALLY unrealistic?

I guess when she gets here I'll have to see if I can really bear to be away from her. I may not give a crap about my marital bedroom with DH:)

We have a family heirloom cradle that we put beside our bed. My "plan" was to keep Sawyer in it for a month-ish, and then move him to his crib. He stayed in our room until he was 3 months old (I just didn't want him any farther away - although the nursery is about 10 steps away from our room and we have a video monitor). He transitioned really easily into the crib when he was 3 months old. That lasted for a month, and then the 4 month sleep regression hit and he spends about 50% of the time at night in our bed.

We started with our LO in a bassinet because we were given one, otherwise we would have skipped it altogether. In the beginning I was very happy to have her near me. I really did have that "I need to check on her all the time" impulse and having her there made me less anxious. LO is 10 weeks so I really do need to start transitioning her. I've been afraid too because she almost sleeps through the night and I don't want to mess it up. haha. But I guess it's best to do now rather than once I go back to work. I will start tonight and let you know how it goes. :)

P.S. I was lmao on your comment about the salad. Seriously!

We had LO in our room for about 3 months since I was breastfeeding and figured the proximity would be easiest on all of us. I didn't love it since all of her little chirps and sighs meant that I didn't sleep so well, but at the same time it was hard to let her move out and into her own room. However, the decision was made for me after she outgrew the UppaBaby bassinet. She had a seamless transition and is doing great in her crib. We couldn't be happier to have our room back to ourselves.

both my girls slept in a bassinet for the first bit and then the crib. One sleeps amazing, one like crap. so I wouldn't vote that it will make them a better or worse sleeper! I liked having them close...I'm a parent who will check to make sure they're breathing all night.

I was one of those people who was adamant that the baby would never sleep in our room - hahaha, the minute we brought her home I said there is no way she's sleeping anywhere other than right next to me! Our nursery is only about three steps away from our bedroom but it was too far for me!

DD has been in the PNP bassinet right next to the bed since birth with no plans to move her out anytime soon (she's 12 weeks now). She's a great sleeper though and started sleeping 6 hr stretches at 6 weeks and has been consistently sleeping 8-9 hrs every night since about 8 weeks. We'll probably move her out around 6 months but will keep her in the PNP as we'll be moving overseas before long and are trying to keep big items to be moved to a minimum.

LO was in the crib right away but usually coslept for about 2-3 hours per day (or night). After 4 weeks his noisy sleeping got stressful and kept us awake so we moved the crib into the living room.
As he got older and naps and night time sleep became different things, he would nap on the floor or swing and we only just recently (3.5 months) got him in the crib for... most naps.

I thought he'd go right into his crib before he was born, but then I actually took him home. And then he ended up with terrible reflux. There was absolutely no way my baby was going to stay in a different room alone at night. All it took was a few times of him puking and choking and we knew it would be a while before he'd be out of our sight.

He slept in the Rock n Play for about a month, then the PNP. Half the time he was in bed with us anyways. We just transitioned him into his crib about a month ago (4 months), but since his sleep regression started, many nights me and him end up in the guest bed together. I do whatever it takes to sleep at this point, and so far, I don't have any regrets. He's a rough sleeper in any case, so all I can do is try to get some rest.

Every baby is different, and it's really hard to say how you'll actually feel until your baby is here. Just go with your gut and what makes you feel most comfortable. I hate when people insist that their way is the only way.

we did things a little differently and its worked well for Pierson. he sleeps in three different places since he was born. We have him sleep in his crib in his own room, the basinette (in our room) or our bed (cosleeping safely!). Sometimes he sleeps in his crib til his first feeding around 3 am and then its eaiser just to keep him in our room. or sometimes he starts in his basinette and then comes to bed with us. or vice versa. it works good bc he is use to sleeping in all three areas without a fuss at all. i think he loves all three places to sleep bc they give him differnet things to look at. i really love the set up to bc he can literally sleep anywhere at 9 weeks old. i do have to admit i feel alot safer/bette rwith him in our room though, even with the angelcare monitor in his crib (godsend by the way!) and i LOVE sleeping in bed with him but sometimes he is just so squirmy (arms and legs moving all around) that he gets the boot! lol.

My lo slept in the bassinet for 1 1/2 months and started sleeping through the night with no sleep training at 2 1/2 months. She is a truly awesome night time sleeper.

But I don't think it made any difference where she was for the first part of her life.... I think she just loves sleep. Plus different things work for different babies so do what feels best for you!

@TurtleDoves: All our bedrooms are on the 2nd floor (Thank GOD bc the stairs are my enemy and I can't even remember what it was like to not be preg and think nothing of going up and down them!)...The hall is in an L shape and she is at the opposite end of the hall but bc of the L shape, it's only about 10 ft away from our door...

I shudder to think if our br was on the 1st floor. I'd just become Rapunzel or something and stay trapped upstairs forever:)

We're planning on having baby in his UB bassinet in our room for the first few weeks/first month or so. Then we'll move him to the crib in his room (which is like 10 feet away from our room).

@jholler25: We bought the jolly jumper bassinet stand and the UB bassinet fits perfectly in it, and it rocks! We didn't want to spend the $$ on the UB brand stand.

@jholler25: how far is your room from hers? Ours is down the hallway. If it were on a diff floor then I'd turn my recliner into my new bed! Or just let LO stay for awhile longer. But that's just me: I don't like marathon stair claiming at 2am

@travelingbrit: that would actually be my ideal setup...I love your plan! Our nursery is too small for a bed too, but I actually did think about getting a twin air mattress and sticking it in there? It would still be crammed but I haven't 1000% ruled that out yet. At least until we get the hang of things!

@Mrsdaredevil: It really exhausts me how OFTEN people force their advice on me! It's pretty frequent! The boundaries that people cross bc I am about to be a member of the Mom Club never ceases to shock me...I was in Salad Creations a couple of days ago and the girl making my salad actually asked me if I planned to BF and then launched into how wonderful it is...Um, excuse me? All you need to know is that I'd like my salad chopped w/dressing on the side! You don't need to know anything about these here boobies!!!

Interesting to see all the responses - It seems like it's about 50/50.

Since we have converted our guest room to our nursery - we decided to leave the double bed in there for a while. That way we can have the baby in the crib, but sleep in the same room for a while. Then SO and I can transition back to our room (on a different floor) whenever we are ready.

Hopefully that will work for us.

@pointybird: No not gross at all, lol! I think I'll do the same if we decide we need to use the bassinet...That stand is ridiculous! I don't care if it can be a clothes hamper later!!!!

I think I've talked about this on here before. My mom went straight to the crib with both my siblings and she says they slept through the night, didn't have transition issues and were overall less "clingy" babies. I was the first born so she had me with her at all times, even for naps during the day. She says she wanted to shoot herself because I was so clingy and wouldn't sleep for more than an hour and used to bf for comfort instead of hunger.
So that made my decision for me. It's crib for him at about 2weeks old and during all naps from the get-go. I have a baby monitor and a recliner in the nursery for feedigs so, we'll be ok!

Mind you even for those first 2 weeks: he will be in a pack n play across our room. There isn't space on the sides of our bed. So, even with being in our room, he isn't right there with us...which I think is also beneficial for transitions.
