@hilsy85: there are SO MANY books I can no longer think about let alone read since becoming a mother :crying: Not unless I want to paralyze myself with fear and sorrow.

Years ago - I loved it - much better than movie. It would be hard to read now as a mother.

@mrs. wagon: I know, I feel like that novel would have really benefitted from a strong editor. They should have slashed a good 100 pages; it started out well and just got way too indulgent and off.

@yoursilverlining: I'm so glad I'm not the only one. Everyone seems to just love the book and movie so much. I'm always in the minority but I was so disgusted with the way she ended it that I always mention how much I didn't like the book.

Read the book, don't watch the movie! Yes, the background of the story is awful, but the book is more about her watching her family go through grief and their recovery process, while the movie focuses more on the rapist (or so it seemed to me).

An interesting note too, the author was a victim of rape and wrote a book, "Lucky," about her experience. I have never been able to bring myself to read that one :-/

i read it and enjoyed it. of course the beginning was disturbing, but it was like watching something similar in a movie or TV. It was still a page turner and well written. I also watched the movie long after I read the book and really liked how it was done. And was glad they did not show the rape scene.

@mrs. 64: I haven't read Lucky but have heard about it. I read another book by the same author though and it was also disturbing.

It was a great book, but I'm glad I read it when I was much younger. I didn't see the movie. Her other book, Lucky, was a true story and was also very well written but it scared me to death.

Nope. Any book that begins with someone dying is off my reading list! And I really just can't read anything involving rape, it's far too disturbing and for me defeats the point of reading as a type of escape and enjoyment.
