We have one and never used it. DS still sleeps with me at 2 and his nursery is basically a catch-all at the moment or served as a play room he rarely used (played in the living room more). We didn't intend not to have one, just the way it worked out, but totally doable without one from the start!

If our condo deal ever goes through, we'll have a guest room/nursery combination...but we plan on LO staying in our room the first 5-6 months or so.

In the beginning we didn't "need" the nursery but it is really nice to have and now at 5.5 months it is more of a need. We have a two bedroom apartment and use her room as a guest room/nursery. We have a daybed that pulls out to a king in there. We only have guests occasionally and it's usually my parents or sisters and I'd rather they stay with us to maximize their time with LO.

There was no second guessing our need for a nursery. OOT family can either sleep at a hotel or on the blow-up mattress in our living room or office. While LO isn't here yet, I can't imagine not needing her own space. Not just for all her stuff but for when she is no longer sleeping in our room.

Honestly, while I would love to have a guest room, our baby lives here and deserves a room a heck of alot more than guests who might come and stay every now and then. We even had this battle with my MIL who thought we should keep a guest room just for when she visits... once a year maybe. She will be getting a hotel.

While it was nice to have a separate space, no we didn't need a nursery. Our changing station was in the bathroom and we used to have the office in the nursery, but we finally moved the office out when LO was about 6 months of age.

We definitely needed it. We only had a 2 bedroom apartment during LO's first year. He slept in his bedroom starting around 8-9 weeks. When we had guests, we would move his crib into our room and the guests had a mattress on the floor in his room. We knew we were only living in that apartment 1 year. Now we have a place with a separate guest room/office.

How long do you plan on living in the house? Say in 3 years time you have a second child. Will you want/need to move again?

We absolutely needed a separate place for him to sleep long term. We moved him to his own room after a month, we all just sleep better that way. Our office is shared with his room and we will eventually move him into the guest room when we need the crib for another baby. We plan on adding a toddler bed to the guest room and keeping the full bed for occasional guests and just moving him temporarily.

I wouldn't use the word "need" because people do with much less, and we thought about staying in a one bedroom, but decided to move into a 2 bedroom. But I discovered I really had trouble sleeping in the same room as lo. We have a twin bed in her room which a guest could sleep on (and lo in the pnp in our room.)

We currently live in a one bedroom condo. DS slept in our room in the pnp until about 5 months. Then we put him in this little hallway off the main entrance and kitchen that houses our utility closet, laundry and one door to the bathroom Once we put him there, he sttn without waking. I hate that we still have to be quiet since there's only a curtain blocking him off from the rest of the place. But I love that he's not in our room anymore and we can use it again without sneaking around. We are in the process of buying a house and I can't WAIT to get him in his nursery.

We absolutely needed one, but really only to separate the two from each other when needed. Honestly? I can do without my extra bedroom for others to sleep in- we had out of town guests stay elsewhere, as we had enough on our plate. They didn't sleep in it full time until 3 months old, but we used it for diaper changes, playing and soothing/separating.

I'm so glad she has her own space. She slept in our room in her bassinet until almost 6 months, then we moved her to her own room. By that point we were all keeping eachother up and it just wasn't working anymore. We plan to turn our current guest bedroom into her 'big girl' room when I get KU with #2 and we'll leave a queen bed in there for her/guests to use if/when needed.

@Foodnerd81: while renting, it's a lot of compromise. You always have to give one thing up to have another. It's a bummer! And I'm sure in Boston it's even harder - it's so expensive!

@Mrs. Pen: I liked our old apartment a lot, but I LOVED our neighborhood. Our apt was priced way too low for the neighborhood so when we looked for something bigger it was at least a thousand dollars more a month for the extra bedroom! So, we loved living there, but it was time to move on. We would have had to move within a year anyway and I didn't want to make sleeping even harder.

We absolutely needed the nursery. LO has slept in her crib from day 3 home from the hospital. We never planned on co-bedding, but I thought she'd be in the RNP in our room. Not so much. Her room is right next to ours, so I leave the doors open and she doesn't feel that far away. I think we all sleep better this way.

@Foodnerd81: oh that's great! That's funny about your old landlord - he must have liked you! Did you really like your old apartment?
Space is key. Even though they say babies don't need much space- toddlers sure do and it doesn't take long to get to the stage. Our apt is 950 sq ft and though it works for us and it's what we can afford - I can tell J feels cramped being in here all day! I'm thankful we have a park behind our apt.

@VEGMAMA: Check out Apartment Therapy, when DH and I were possibly going to be living in a 1-br with LO I used that site a lot to see how we could make it work. I saw a few nurseries/guest rooms that may give you ideas.

Our LO still sleeps in our room, her crib is sidecarred to our bed so even though we have a nursery, it's basically holding all of her stuff.

@Mrs. Pen: Yes, we did! It ended up eventually being easier than we thought, because this building was built in 2005 so no lead paint issues. And then once we told our old landlord we were moving out he tried to convince us to stay and started brainstorming about where we could put the baby (we all very seriously considered the closet too). This is much better for us to have space to spread out, and we have a washer and dryer in our unit-- it's very luxurious :) Thanks for asking and remembering!

I'm not voting since LO isn't here yet, but right now, the baby's room is nursery/guest room. I figure in the beginning, the baby will be in our room, and that's when we will have the most guests (both our moms are going to stay for a little while-- not at the same time). So I'll set up a changing station and the rock and play in our room, but leave most of the other baby stuff in the second bedroom. The second bedroom will have a queen size bed (double would be way better but we already had the queen), crib, dresser/changer. Other baby stuff will be in the living room in one corner.

Once baby is sleep trained or STTN in his/her own room, any guests are going to have to sleep in the living room. No way will I jeopardize baby's sleep for a guest's comfort!

ETA: We are renting. This wouldn't be a long term solution for us.

My daughter didn't really move into her room until 8 months, and even now, she doesn't do much more than sleep in it. With a future child, I'll put them in a room sooner, because she started waking up waaaaaaay less when we did. But really, just for sleeping.

I see a lot of people who put a comfy futon/pull out couch in their nursery. That way, you have a nice space to nurse or nap while the baby sleeps, and you have space for guests too. Total win win.

We needed one. She had a dresser, glider and crib which would never fit in our room. She slept in our room for the first few months, but no one needed to stay with us much anyway. The only person who stayed was my sister and she slept in the living room with no problem. I would say if you really want a bed for guests and there is room, put it in there with the baby's things. Babies accumulate so much! Also consider how often you would have people staying with you, but your baby lives with you.
