We went from whole milk to 1%, so we were only buying one kind of milk. Otherwise, I didn't change anything.

We stuck with whole milk for a while, but both kids' BMIs are kind of high at this point, so we switched all the way down to 1%. They both drink a ton of milk-- we can go through a gallon in a week easily, and no one else drinks that milk. (We drink skim lactaid.)

We're planning on switching to 2%, only because that's what DH and I drink. I'm SO tired of buying separate milk. DS is HUGE though (32 pounds at 2 and 37" tall) and drinks a ton of milk, so I think he's definitely ready. We spend so much money on separate milks.

We did switch to 2% but unrelated because it's fattier. Ped told us 2% is heart healthier and with a history of heart problems on both sides it was a easy choice. Anyway she's on soy milk so it's moot.

We switched from whole to 2% milk for LO at 2, but because she is so tiny our pediatrician suggested we switch back to whole, which we did.

We generally only buy whole-fat yogurt and cheese. Low fat cheese is an abomination and I don't like the fake sweeteners that are used with most low-fat yogurts.

No, reduced fat is generally more processed, which we try to stay away from when possible. Plus some studies have shown recently that people who eat full fat (at least for dairy products) tend to actually be thinner.

No, my 2.5 yo is large on the percentiles but not at all fat so I don't see the need. My youngest just turned 1 so I"m not buying 2 different milks for them anyway. I think I'll just keep it full fat and try to cut back on the amount they consume when they get older. He still drinks a lot of milk!

ETA: My husband and I don't really drink milk. We are of the mantra that its "just another high calorie beverage". Kids need the fat for their brain development though.

i got that email a few months ago too and thought it was the most ridiculous thing i ever read and honestly discredited the whole newsletter for me. I remember it writing things like "time to trim the fat" for your toddler?! Nice way to begin the induction of unnecessary concerns about dieting and weight and steer children away from eating intuitively. (My disclaimer is that i work in the eating disorders field and that email royally pissed me off!)

ETA. I did switch to 2% milk because that's what DH and I drink. But the recommendations about low fat yogurt and cheese, etc, i just rolled my eyes. I've actually stopped buying all those diet products for myself a while ago (I used to buy into them) because i want to raise my kids diet-free.

No, I still buy whole fat, but LO is below the weight chart, so any calories are helpful. But I've done a lot of switching to fuller fat items for DH and myself, and imagine I'll keep LO on full fat stuff until/unless weight becomes an issue.

My baby isn't 2 yet but I feel like the general wisdom of healthy eating at the moment is that the best thing for ANY person is to eat appropriate amounts of whole foods and shy away from processed/reduced fat foods.
