I would never ask my ped for parenting advice. Any thing he offers I just politely ignore.

I've never even thought to discuss sleep with our ped. Haven't asked, but I think HB and other online resources have been more valuable for advice.

Yes, but we go to weissbluth's practice so that made the sleep training decision a bit easier for us.

Yes. I was surprised to find that he was anti-CIO, which made me feel better. I was on the fence about CIO, but we had tried everything and I was at the end of my rope. He just really said that it was important that LO start putting himself to sleep at night, and that there might be a small bit of crying, but that it was okay for me to comfort him when he did. So when he cried, I comforted, just not to sleep, and within a few nights he was going to bed on his own. It was the best thing we ever did. That being said, LO is still nursing 2xs a night at 7 months, which my pedi says he thinks is fine. Its just better than getting up 10 time a night. I really like our pedi. and normally listen to his advice.

At E's 4 month appt, the NP basically said, "oh, she's at that age where it's kind of a crapshoot". Not. Helpful. She did advise we put her down for naps in her crib, though.

My particular doctor - yes, I do. Because her views pretty much aligned with mine. She was all for safe-cosleeping practices, but ultimately she said that she supports and encourages whatever safe sleeping situation works best for each individual family. In fact she applies that principal to her general care. I love that she has always been supportive and helpful from a more objective standpoint. I truly appreciate her insight.

However, any other doctor I've seen, I wouldn't trust so readily.

We've been asked about DS' sleep at visits but I don't recall receiving any recommendations. We go back for DS' one year check-up (eek) in about three weeks and he doesn't STTN so I'll be curious if they say anything).

No.
I did ask him and I do trust him, however, he was all for CIO without any sort of sleep routine advice and/or method of how to go about it. I couldn't just CIO without knowing sleep routine and direction. I read a book on it which explains it perfectly (Ferber). He told me about 1.5h wake times and establishing a pre-bedtime routine and now my sons sleeps great!

@Freckles: no. We don't get a lot of training on the subject and so pediatricians either inform their opinion based on their own kids (and they usually HAVE to sleep due to their job-- leading to more recs of CIO) or based on the little we do learn... Unless for some reason they've taken a special interest in the subject and have done additional reading.

@Freckles: my friend is an ER pediatrician and I asked him about his expertise in sleep methods and he said he read some of the books (not in full) and took the helpful information. He said most doctors will recommend CIO since its the most popular method. My friend does not have any children yet, so I would take advice with a grain of salt.

In LOs first year we went to a big practice and seemed to see a different ped most times. They all had different views so I just kinda nodded and said that's nice - even though half the time it was not in line with what the previous ped had said - and I was semi-vague on giving them details because I just didn't really want to get into it. I knew what the various options were and we were figuring it out for our family.

I'm reading the Weissbluth book now. It's very informative for how important sleep really is. It is refreshing that he discusses all methods, but I'm too early into the book to catch any significant biases. He does, at least, account for differences in styles. For example, "if you co-sleep XYZ"...

Ours was concerned about LO's lack of sleep with multiple wakeups at 4-6 months old. He suggested CIO at four months. It didn't go well, but we were ready by 6 months. Once LO learned to put himself to sleep, everything improved. He suggested advice, but didn't enforce it on us.

DD's ped was supportive in our desire to sleep-train by CIO but thought we should wait longer to do so (DD was 3.5 months) but for health reasons but only because he has a soft spot for DD! He didn't suggest anything nor did he recommend anything, which was fine with me. He just felt that we could have waited a month or so.

Nope.

We've been with the same practice but had 3 different pediatricians. The first was fine with co-sleeping, the 2nd was very against it so I made it a point not to discuss our sleeping arrangements any longer. The doctor who started the entire practice has a book out and he is pro-CIO and advocates for putting the baby down at 7 p.m. and coming back at 7 a.m. Not for us.
