I'd prefer Tdap, and maybe suggest flu, too. But flu isn't always that effective, so I'd definitely be lenient on that. I don't think I'd be too pushy on either, unless you're definitely prepared to find a new caregiver.

Yes. When we offered the job to her we asked that she get the vaccine and a flu shot (it was flu season). We told her we would pay for it. She absolutely had no problem with it.

As you probably know, I'm currently in this pickle, since I forgot to ask her and we're only 2.5 weeks away from me going back to work. I would ask her to do it, and if making the appointment is the issue, you can get one at a CVS or Walgreens Minute Clinic the very same day that you need one, with very little forms.

The problem is, you are considered up-to-date officially if you had it sometime in the last 10 years, but the new research out there shows that it really should be given every 2 to 3 years that you're interacting with a newborn. That's the issue. A lot of people think that they're up to date because their official record say so, but in reality the vaccine has worn off. My in-laws' dr in fact REFUSED to give them the Tdap booster because he was going off the official guidelines and not the newborn guidelines.

@Madison43: yeah I think where the baby will have to go through flu season without a flu shot, I would ask her to get that too.

Our nanny was up to date on tdap and made sure to get her flu shot before LO2 came home. Absent extenuating circumstances, I think it's fair to require it.

We don't have a nanny, but if we did, I would want her to be up to date on this for sure. ETA: I would share that our OB really emphasized the importance of caretakers having this in order so it's clear this is not something coming just from me!

I checked with our nanny and she is up to date.
Our preschool teachers are also required to be up to date and as an occasional volunteer at the preschool I'm required to be up to date as well.

My sister is a nanny and when her boss had #2 she got it it was a few months before G was born, so I'll ask her how she mentioned it :)

Lots of Tdap questions today!

I just realized I never asked our nanny if she is up to date with Tdap. My guess is no, since when I mentioned this winter that she may want a flu shot, she basically said thanks but no thanks. It wasn't really a concern because my kids are fully vaccinated, and she didn't start with us until our youngest was 9 months.

However, we are due with #3 in the fall. And she'll continue to be our nanny. As in, even when I'm on maternity leave from work, she'll be here helping out, mostly with the other kids. I feel pretty strongly that she should have Tdap being around our newborn all the time.

How would you raise this? Did you or would you require your nanny to get the Tdap? I would pay for it, if that is a concern.
