I grew up where we really didn't have cars so you either walked or rode a bike. In short, yeah I rode a bike a lot growing up.

Yes I used to ride my bike everywhere! Sometimes I would ride it to go visit friends, other times I would just ride around town to collect my own thoughts. I loved biking!

It was my mode of transportation! During my bike riding years we lived in a small town so the only rule was to be home for dinner. Shame times have changed so much.

We rode our bikes so much. We lived in the middle of nowhere and it was like 5 miles to a tiny little gas station. My sister and I would save up quarters and go buy candy. And a lot of the roads were that really loose sand (we called it sugar sand) and I laugh about how much we would bike through that. It was so thick and soft that you'd have to stand and pedal your little heart out. I don't think I could do it now.

Tons. We lived in a great neighborhood with parks nearby, and when I was older it was easy to get to 7-11 or whatever. I also rode my bike to school through high school. Hell, I still ride my bike everywhere.

Everywhere!!! All summer long, we rode our bikes to the corner store for candy runs, the ice cream store, the park, to Burger King for fries, to the movie store to rent movies. It was my main method of transportation from age 8-16+ . One of the main reasons DH and I bought in the area we did is because it's IN town so LO will be able to ride her bike to friends houses, soccer practice, school etc. We would love a little more space and to not be in such a cookie cutter neighborhood, but giving her that freedom as she grows up is worth it.

No, my mom was overprotective and wouldn't let me stray too far. My bikes also kept getting stolen out of our backyard.

@mrbee: Same! we grew up in the country and my bike was like my right arm. I couldn't survive without it. We would bike all over the place. My brother and I always knew how to fix our own bikes if something went wrong.. and if we didn't we would play around in the garage until we could figure it out.

We rode our bikes everywhere too, but it was more to the edges of the woods so we could go play in the creek or to neighbors houses. I don't know if I'll ever let my kids ride any farther than a few streets away, and it's sad!

YES! Especially during middle school. My friends and I would bike all over our neighborhood together (sort of like a pack!) . . . my bike took me to my friends' houses, the movie theatre, the pool . . . those were great days!

Growing up, I rode on my bike everywhere with my brother... we would bike for miles and miles. There used to be these things called "book stores" where you could buy printed copies of ebooks (aka "books"). We would bike to every bookstore within miles, and check out their books and magazines (these were like books, but they came out monthly).

Looking back, I loved loved loved my bike growing up! I think the kids in our generation won't have nearly as much freedom to just bike around while they're young... it makes me sad. Maybe they will just stay home and download apps onto their iPads? Gotta admit that if that was an option for me growing up, I wouldn't have felt nearly the urge to leave the house!

Did you ride your bike a lot growing up? Will you let your kid bike around as much as you did?
