Ours will be at our home, a backyard BBQ, and I don't think we will be serving alcohol. Most of our friends enjoy a beer once in a while when we're hanging out and DH works for a beer company but we don't really see a reason to have it at our son's first birthday.

@MusicaV: we had ours at home and served beer and wine.

I know at my wedding venue we has to obtain a liquor license. It was so NOT a big deal to get a one day liquor license...and I don't remember it costing very much at all. I don't think it's a big deal if you choose to serve alcohol or not but just wanted to let you know it wasn't difficult or expensive for us to get ours.

We sure will! My husband and I feel like this party is 20% celebrating our son's birth and 80% celebrating making through the first year as parents, & we generally celebrate with alcohol.

But it's going to be at our house and I don't think it's a "need" to do. Especially if you have to go out of your way to get a liquor license.

We had her party at home so we got some beer to serve but we didn't want to go crazy because I felt that would be inappropriate. Since you have to go through the trouble of a license though I would say forget it. No one would think otherwise IMO.

DD's party was at a restaurant and most of our guests were adults--we had an open bar.

DS' party will be at the club house in our building. We're catering brunch, so mostly likely no alcohol. I might have some champagne available so people can make mimosas.

No. I don't see why alcohol should be at a 1 year old's birthday party. In your case, I wouldn't take the extra effort to get it.

We served beer and wine at our DD's 1st bday party. It was really more like a party for us, though, to celebrate getting to our first year of parenthood. Future parties will be more child-centered, so no alcohol.

We served champagne (and had beer/wine available since the party was at our house). Most of the children's parties we go to serve alcohol; not serving is definitely the exception.

In your case though, i would probably forgo alcohol. The license might be hard to get and might require you to carry event insurance and/or hire a licensed bartender - too much hassle IMO!

I'm sure the "liquor license" in question is a banquet permit, which is $10 and you can get it in 2 minute from your local liquor store.

We served beer and wine. No one really touched the wine but people drank beer. I think it's nice to have the option, especially if the party is later in the afternoon.

Yeah, I wouldn't go to the trouble of getting a liquor license. If that wasn't a factor, depending on your guest list, it could be nice but not a necessity either way. At LO's party, it'll definitely be more adults without children than adults with children, so we'll probably serve some drinks. I would think if it's mostly parents and young children, they wouldn't miss it.

if it meant getting a liquor license, i wouldn't serve alcohol. i don't think it's a necessity at a children's party, even though it would be nice to have. that's too bad they require it.

ETA: if others, like your DH, are willing to go through the process of obtaining the license and purchasing the alcohol, then that's fine but i don't think you *need* to.

Most likely yes in the form of a champagbe punch or sangria. Most of the attendees will be adults. All of the first birthday parties and little kid parties where the guests are primarily family or friends of the parents alcohol is served.

ETA: I wouldn't get a license just to serve alcohol. A couple hours with lemonade is not going to hurt anyone.
