I would never, EVER sit in my home for 30 days. But I did not get the care I needed after my baby was born - it really sucked. My husband went back to working from home 7 days after I delivered, and I was left to take care of my self, my baby, and the house. Hell to the no will I ever be doing that again.

I should add that it wasn't because he was a jerk, it was just because we didn't know what I would need. I would suggest that everyone overestimate their needs for post partum care and support, rather than trying to be a hero and getting to the grind really quickly.

@regberadaisy: You smart, me--learned the hard way. I remember my husband coming home and examining my head for ginger. LOL! I really enjoyed reading that article by the way.

@cranberryapple: I hated my mom's ginger bath concoction--I got ginger pieces stuck in my hair and it made a mess in the tub.

Wow, your mom is HARDCORE and you are suuuuuch a goooooood daughter to have listened to her! My mom stayed with me almost a month, but I took waaay more liberties. She would warn me about things and be super paranoid if I stepped out, which I had to at times. (Although I'm sure I didn't *need* to go out on my birthday for sushi....^_~)

Lotsa chicken and GINGER (I HATE ginger!!), soupy stuff, and warm/room temperature water. Nothing cold, not even fruit!! She let me shower, but for the first week, she made me use this ginger concoction to wash myself. I had a handful of days when I was allowed out, and she insisted I put something over my head to prevent the "wind" from going to my head.

Omg, you should've seen her reaction one night when I had washed my hair and decided to go to sleep with damp hair! She went ballistic on me!! (I don't really buy that mumbo jumbo...)

That's why you're such a good daughter!! You listen to your mother!! :P I only half-listened! (I would not want me for a daughter, let's just say that!)

I tried! I really did but it was a failure after a few days. I ate chicken for 30 days though! I got STIR CRAZY! I showered at the hospital before I went home and about four days after I got home. I was stanky stanky! I washed my hair with ginger water at the very least. My mom also yelled at me when I opened the refrigerator. Honestly, I hated sit moon. I'll never do it again. Trapped in your house for 30 days? Uh, no thanks. Not for me.

My mom mentioned it while we were on vaca last week since she'll be staying with us the first month. I'll probably follow a looser version of sit month because I need my showers! I don't think I can go 30 days without it, a few days, maybe.

My mom made seaweed soup for me and made me eat it all the time. I did everything else but got yelled at by my mom (opening the fridge door, drinking cold drinks, etc.) I should have listened, though, because now my teeth/gums hurt more and my body hurts a lot every now and then.

Nope. My parents didn't push it on me, but they would bring over soup every other day for me. My recovery consisted of getting back on my feet and resuming normal activities.

I did a modified, looser version of the sit month. My mom made me the chicken soup nearly every day of maternity leave and yelled at me if I even got near the front door. And she was constantly trying to put blankets around my shoulders and thick socks on my feet. I was allowed to shower, although my mom would send me back upstairs to blow dry my hair if it was wet.

All in all, though, it was awesome to have my mom (and my dad) around to help so much during leave. DH and I barely had to cook any meals, so we just focused on bonding with DD and hanging out.

Oh, and we did sneak out of the house for a few outings with the baby - we just didn't tell my mom!

I didn't really... Had to evacuate due to hurricane when DD was two weeks so really had no choice. With DS I did eat lots of soups for lactation but was out and about a week later since my in laws were in town.

I didn't take part in a formal 'sit' but my DH made sure to take really really great care of me that first month. I basically sat on the couch and fed the baby. It was amazing and I think that it helped with the transition :)

Haven't asked this in a while...

who else followed the "sit month" pp care ritual?

What did you partake in?

My mom was with me for the 30 days so I ate chicken for thirty.days. With homemade rice wine. In soup. In 80 degree days.

I also was not allowed to wash my hair or shower. Thank god she gave me a pardon for a wedding at 2 weeks pp. But only with sponge bath with herbal ginger water she got from a herb shop in C-town.

My mom yelled at me for stepping outside when there was no wind. For drinking room temp water (she wanted me to drink hot water). For wearing a tank top...indoors!

My poor husband. ;)

ETA: For those that don't know what this is; here is a decent article:
