I think we'll only do close family for ours, and maybe a few friends. But we don't have a ton of friends with kids! This is over a year away though, I'm just speculating. :)

We didn't even have a real birthday party for DD. We had our best friends over for cake the weekend after her birthday, and that was it! On her birthday, we went out to lunch and to the beach, but it was just me, DH, and my dad, so it was super low-key.

I'm actually very happy we didn't do a big birthday party. I doubt we'll do one for DS either. DD had a bigger party for her second birthday (with both sets of grandparents, aunts, cousin, etc...) and it was still kind of overwhelming for her. I made it really low key (a barbeque at the park) and long before we got to cake she was exhausted and whiney. I think we'll do something smaller for her third birthday again; I'm not going to do another full party until she actually requests it herself.

@autumnlove: I say do whatever suits your family best! The truth is, your LO won't remember a thing, but it's always nice to make it a little extra special for posterity :).

Ours was about 25 people .... and when I was putting it together I kind of regretted making it that big! I wanted smaller but dh wanted to celebrate with more family and friends and I let him have his way. But lo isn't a people person, so she gets shy around all of those people so I think she would have liked it better with less. Plus she had no idea what was going on and that the party was for her, so I was spending all this time preparing for her party when I could have been spending that quality time with my daughter.

In the end I'm happy we had the party, it was fun, everyone enjoyed it..... but I know I would have been just as happy with something smaller.

@autumnlove: DS will be one 12/17! I went back and forth so many times - our place is really small and I wouldn't be able to invite more than just my parents and brother. So I decided on a pizza place in town. This way I can invite my friends who've recently had babies, too, DS's godparents, my grandparents. (And I don't have to clean it up! hehe)

It'll be awhile before DD's 1st, but since none of my family and friends live nearby, it'll be a tiny party. That won't stop me from DIYing it though :)

We had 21 people total at ours.
It wasn't extravagant, but it was a nice party, I did a lot of DIY projects and we got nice pictures.

I think I would have regretted not throwing a party for her if we kept it low key. Baby only turns 1 once!

Ours was only about 30 people. It was great! I think babies can
get scared and overwhelmed if the party is too big anyway.

It seems like the big parties are just for the parents-- 1 year olds get overwhelmed by so many people. You can still take adorable photos of LO without there being a ton of people around, and it will be a lot easier on you and the birthday baby. So I wouldn't only worry about doing a big party if it is what YOU want. LO won't know any different and would probably prefer a quiet day.

We are just having grandparents and aunts and uncles. We'll go to the zoo or something for the day, a nice lunch or dinner somewhere, and a small cake for him to attack. I see no need to get stressed over a big party he won't remember.

How lowkey will it be?

My LO isn't 1 yet but we won't be having a big, extravagant party, but I do want to have a fun theme and invite some friends as well. I know I definitely want to document it and do things like a smash cake and maybe a DIY photobooth set-up...just to make it extra special. I don't plan on spending $1000+ (or even $500+) though!

I'm not planning a big 1st birthday party for my LO next month. I was thinking I would just keep it low key and only invite family. Some of my friends keep asking me to change my mind because I will regret it....
