I had filled DH in a lot on some topics and birth stories from HB to at least prepare him for that. He was so nervous that we considered hiring a Doula (so I'd have some support - haha!) until we learned I'd be having a c-section anyway and we decided to skip it after that. We managed just fine, although he was in total shell shock and I had to yell at him to comfort me. haha. It was 5 meetings, 2 hours each. (Lamaze) The main thing that helped me was knowing what is going to happen and when to go to the hospital (although even that turned out to be tricky since I had back labor and my contractions never got regular!) Is there any other hospital in your area where you could be added to a course? I really enjoyed our class, but there wasn't any totally new information because I've been obsessively reading and researching for months now. It was helpful to see comfort measures in action.</p> <p>Where the class was really useful was for my FI, and for starting a dialogue between the two of us. He had lots of questions after each class and it spurred us to talk through things about labor. Like PP have said, he wouldn't be one to sit down and read a natural childbirth book, so this was a good way to get him thinking about it. I already had researched on my own most everything that was brought up in class, and then in the end it didn't matter too much because I ended up with a c-section. We found one in our area that offered a free full-day class and while they did try to encourage the class to sign up with one of their doctors, there was no real pressure and we simply said no and that was it! She spent so much time having us get to know the other parents and no time on birthing techniques. DH was really dissapponted in the way the class was run and felt we should have just skipped them (and the $$ to take it). I haven't taken them yet but I know personally, even if I could learn as much from a book it would just make me feel better to take a class- plus I know Dh won't study a book but would come along to a class.
