My parents had a small 2 bedroom house, and we all made do! :-) I was on the top bunk, my little brother was on the bottom bunk (we would fall out of bed all the time, so the ladder in the front helped keep him in! My sister had a twin bed. At some point (I must have been around 4?) I was taking a taking a nap in the top one and fell through the safety bar smashing my face onto the linoleum floor below.
