We sleep trained to get through the 8/9 month regression. We did a gentle approach and it worked wonderfully.

We are going through this right now. My LO was four months at the end of February. We also recently dealt with swaddle weaning (due to rolling while swaddled), a cold, and shots. After all that his sleep was awful and I'm going back to work. I wouldn't say that he ever really cried, but he did a lot of whining, fussing, and some yelling the first night. By th third night I only heard him wake up once. I watchd him on the monitor and he put himself back to sleep after 8-10 minutes. I decided to do naps too by day three. He used to nap 1-2 hours without a problem, but has recently started waking up after 30 minutes. I decided that I would let him fuss/yell for the remainder of an hour. After about 15 minutes he went back to sleep and slept for over 1.5 hours. Some babies are fine with only short naps, but they were not enough for my LO. We always put him down drowsy, but awake and now we can do it without the pacifier.

Our kids always come out of it on their own. We just have to try make sure not to build habits we don't want to continue (like cosleeping all night a lot of nights in a row) while we're giving them the extra attention they need to get through the rough patch.

@mrskc: :/ Yeah, it happens pretty much any time there are a lot of developmental milestones/wonder weeks/growth spurt all together.

@hilsy85: Almost 5.5 months. The regression lasted about 3 weeks for us. I'm convinced nap training helped though.

@Weagle: when did your LO go back to normal night time sleep?
@Tidybee: ack I wish L would put himself back to sleep! We usually at least need to go in an re insert the paci.
@mrskc: oy every hour--poor you!

Ugh I'm wondering this. Naps have always been short. I thought we were doing good because last week he was sleeping all night but the last couple of nights he's been waking up a bunch again. It was every hour last night.

@zippylef: There's a 6 month regression?! And 9 month? How did I not know this.

C seems to be coming through it. I think it started around 3 1/2 months. We simply started doing CIO after a week of getting NO sleep. She still wakes up 2-3 times a night but maybe for a minute and then puts herself back down.

@hilsy85: The 4 month one was non-existant and the 6 month one... like 2 weeks, maybe?

My son went through the 4 month regression around 3 1/2 months. We didn't sleep train because I felt he was still too young at that point Everyone is different but I didn't feel comfortable doing CIO until around 6 months. The regression lasted a few weeks and then he pretty much went back to STTN.

LO naturally went back to normal for the 4 month regression for night, but we had to nap train. It took less than 3 days. We had to sleep train for night and naps for the 9 month regression, but it only took one night and one nap.

We didn't battle the the 4 or 6 month ones, but OH BOY did we go through the 9 month one. I let her go for 2.5 months before I gave in a we did CIO (which is how we sleep trained her at 6 months) for one night and she's been back to her old sleep since.

@mrsjyw: yeah we've had a few nights where LO w ill go back to his old schedule of one wakeup, but then the next night, he's up 2-3x again! I hope your guy is on his way out of this period! :)

not much of a helpful post here, as we're just going through it now. but wanted to commiserate!

A went from sttn 12 hours to waking up 2-3x a couple of times last week, he's always been a horrible napper, and that hasn't changed at all. The last few nights he's woken up earlier than normal (after 10 hours) but I'm hoping we're getting back to our normal.

LO is currently going through the 4 month sleep regression, and went from taking 3 1.5-2hr naps a day and waking once at night to eat, to taking 4 45 min naps and waking anywhere from 2-4 times a night.

My question is, did your LO naturally go back to good sleep habits after a sleep regression? And how long did it take? Or did you have to sleep train to get them back on track? I'm not against sleep training, but there's just so much different information out there that I'm a bit overwhelmed at how you know which method is best for you.
