He gets 2 weeks paid paternity leave plus he gets a little over 4 weeks of PTO for the year so he can take more if he wants.

@LindsayInNY: What we've learned with NJ is that there are a lot of family-friendly mandates (IF, paying for alternative formulas, hearing aids, parental leave) but they leave room for individual employers/insurers to decide their own policies. We were so bummed because of our situation living in NJ and not benefitting from any of the mandates. DH ended up using vacation time and was the first employee in his company to take more than a day off...apparently he set the example for others because a coworker in a similar position took a similar amount of vacation time a few weeks later.

Lol - no. My husband can barely take his vacation. He works at a hedge fund and people are intense there. Most of the men take 4-5 days off for paternity leave. But since they don't really use their 3 weeks of vacation, it is all sort of the same thing

There is no maternity or paternity leave available at my DH's company. He could only use vacation or 12 weeks of unpaid FMLA. He used a week of vacation for both kids.

@regberadaisy: exactly what I was thinking. We women often have waiting periods, so it makes sense it goes both ways. I don't know anyone around here with paid paternity leave, so it is awesome that they offer paternity leave at all.

Nope. DH could use FMLA to be home with us unpaid but he typically just uses PTO. Last baby, he had just started a new job so he only took off 4 days! With twins coming I'm banking on two weeks.

I don't think so. A waiting period makes sense- I had a waiting period of one year for my unpaid maternity leave at my previous employer, so it makes sense that the same would go for men (? maybe?)

DH might at his new work place but I am unsure. He gets to save up to 8 days of paid vacation for the following year, so we might save a few extra days just in case. Where he was working when we had LO he took 5 days paid, it was either vacation or sick leave, I can't recall.

@Mama Bird: That's what I've been trying to look into (no one mentioned it). From what I read, it sounds like there is a 12 month requirement with your employer but what stinks is that by working in NJ, he pays into it. And his former employer was NJ based too so he's been paying into it for 3+ years now. I don't think us living in NY makes a difference either. But this part seems to address what you said, I think?: "A claimant must have had at least 20 calendar weeks in covered New Jersey employment in which he/she earned $145 or more (called "base weeks"), or have earned $7,300 or more in such employment during the "Base Year" period." He would definitely qualify for that then. He started in September and I'm due in June. I don't know if he could double dip vacation time with this because it only pays a max of $600 per week. But I'm trying to look into it more! His HR may be NY-based and not know?

@LindsayInNY: I haven't read all the responses, so maybe someone mentioned this, but is your husband eligible for the nj family bonding leave? I think that's only a five month waiting period.

My husband's company officially offers 2 weeks paid to the "secondary caregiver" and 8 weeks paid to the "primary caregiver." He took 3 weeks off and they didn't ever end up deducting the 3rd week from his vacation. His company is really great about that stuff. His boss came back part-time for 2 months after maternity leave at full salary.

Will your DH be through the one-year waiting period by the time you're due?

My DH gets a month at full pay, and he can take as much of his regular vacation as he wants (he accrues 4 weeks per year). So in theory he could peace out of there for two solid months at full pay. That's a lot better than I'm getting, and I'm the one having the baby.
