Our lot is like .25 acres, so it's not too big, but there's plenty of room for my husband's garden, the swingset, and running room. Someday, when we retire, we want to buy 50-100 acres. Big enoughfor our trampoline and room for the kids to play. It is fenced in for our dog. We have a fire pit so we have a lot of get togethers back there in the summer. We have a cul dasac full of kids and they just run from yard to yard when they play-pretty much every afternoon, so we don't really need much more yard of our own. I grew up on a (non-working) farm, and honestly, I don't ever want to have to put in the kind of work that is involved in maintaining a lot of land. Our house is on about 1/4 acre. It has a small backyard, but it's big enough for a small garden, a swing set, and some general patio/social space. (Umm, none of which we have at the moment, but we'll get there eventually). We have a dog so we want to make sure she as plenty of space to roam and have fun but like many commented we don't want the upkeep to be unmanageable. I grew up in a house with a similar size yard, maybe a little bigger, and some of my favorite memories are playing and exploring all the different little areas there were. With a good-sized yard we had enough room for a comfortable screened porch, a garden plot, a swing/sand box area, open space for playing, grassy space for my brother to throw a football (I could have too but I wasn't into that), among other things. I'd love acres of land (forest surrounding my backyard or going way far back) but as for the actual yard that we landscape, I'd like a medium sized plot of land that is FLAT. Maybe about 3000 sq feet of yard. I would like a SMALL front yard. I'm all about less amount of work and most amount of useable space for games, sports, and dogs running around. We have a big deck and medium sized yard that abuts a nature preserve so it's the bet of both worlds. In our current home, we have 1/4 acre and we have already landscaped a lot of it. My husband enjoys yard work. Me? Not so much. I will do manual labor when needed, though. Also, keeping up with grass in the south is so hard, it just doesn't like to grow! We have a small front yard and the grass there looks great. Our backyard is mostly grassy weeds but we're doing what we can to make it look decent by mulching more and more each year. :) @mrbee, you boys did a LOT in your yard!! I didn't do much yard work (any) as a kid.
