We ended up splurging...with the same brand of crib & dresser as @hergreenapples: It was also my intention to save but DH insisted on having this one, he loved the style & colour of it. Super happy to have the option of turning it into a double.

We went with "save" & a bit of settling on my part. I liked the modern style but wanted a 4-in-1 convertible.... I couldn't find a modern 4-in-1 in budget so we got a 3-in-1.

Pic 1. What I wanted - Lolly & Me McKinley 4-in-1
Pic 2. What we got - Baby Mod Modena 3-in-1

We splurged and got the sparrow. If we would have had a girl, my dream crib was a bargain, but since it was a boy, I had to choose something else since I just couldn't get into a Jenny Lind style for his room. I could never find anything else I liked and then pregnancy crazy kicked in and I couldn't let it go. We'll probably end up passing it along to my SIL since he'll be at least 2 before they have a baby.

We just got an affordable cot which looked nice, nothing fancy at all. We used it for DS, then at 18 months we put him in a big boy bed and now DD who is 4 months old is using the cot.

We spent about $250 spent! I would definitely not splurge on a cot because we want our kids to be in beds early :-)

We loved the look of Pottery Barn cribs but couldn't justify spending that much on something that was going to get abused. So we bought the Graco Lauren which has the same sort of style but was super cheap. We love it!

It was my full intention to save. I'd picked out a $300 crib from Target. But then some business contacts told DH about a children's furniture store in town where they bought all their kids' furniture and DH really wanted to check it out. We ended up splurging on a crib we found there (DH's decision!) that is solid wood, made entirely in Canada, converts into five different configurations (including a double bed) and is compliant with some pretty rigid environmental/non-toxic regulations. I honestly could have gone either way!

The crib we ended up with:

Of all of the nursery furniture items, we were the most concerned about having a really high quality crib. We figured DD would spend a lot of time in it, plus she would probably chew on the rails. So we splurged and bought the Oeuf crib that we loved.

and we totally registered for the naturepedic organic mattress (DH even got on the floor with the mattresses to pick out the right one!) and ours was being discontinued, so it was over $100 off the original price, so my bro and sis bought it for us!

@birdofafeather: I said it before and I'll say it again - LOVE what you did with that crib! We're definitely going to change it up for #2!

Our crib was actually a SAVE even though I just bought it because I really like the look! It's a DaVinci Jenny Lind (same as @birdofafeather: but in white).

We recieved a GC for Amazon and bought it right away, which was a good thing, because later down the line I found the Bratt Decor wrought-iron cribs, which would have been a DREAM crib! I don't regret our crib at all though, because I've seen it painted in all different colors and will be happy to change it up for baby #2 when the time comes. Our SPLURGE was the Naturepedic Organic mattress.
