Not really. I did limit really spicy foods as a newborn and gradually ate it. Similar with like certain grains I like. Now at 3 months, I eat whatever in moderation. With my first LO, I bf until 14 months and ate whatever too.

@MrsADS: eliminating dairy sounds so rough. I love to drink a glass of 2% milk on a regular basis plus ice cream. DH thinks baby may be lactose intolerant like him, but judging by his diapers it all looks the same to me.

@Catlady ditto here. MSPI/reflux from hell and I first eliminated just dairy. Then dairy/soy. Then elimination of all top 8 allergens plus tomato, berry, corn, beef. THEN at 4 months went on the Dr. Sears total elimination diet and only ate turkey, zucchini, pears, sweet potatoes, and olive oil for 2 weeks and reintroduced foods 1 at a time.

Now LO is almost 9 months and I am "just" dairy, soy, nut free (and beef and tomato-light). I feel like I can eat everything compared to how it used to be. His MSPI/other issues were so severe, his GI also does not want me to introduce anything until he is a year AND we have allergy testing done on him. Now we are thinking he may have eosinophilic esophagitis based on all the symptoms.

The dairy/soy/nut free has just become the norm for me and now it's no big deal. Although I do wish I could eat out or just grab a sandwich out or something on days I don't feel like packing lunch at work.

I was also mindful of caffeine consumption with LO1 but LO2 didn't seem affected by it.

I went off a million things for my reflux and colic baby but you typically don't have to unless you notice something. I was off dairy, soy, crucifers, night shades, spices, chocolate, coffee, tea, decaf or otherwise, overtly acidic foods, caffeine, and basically processed foods. At the peak of DS' issues I lived on like roast chicken, rice, and nori, plus bananas and vegan shakes with coconut oil. It was insane.

@OldpuebloJenn: @mfa_lady: oh yes I forgot too! Mint tea and sage were two things I love, but stayed away from for supply reasons. Same with Sudafed & other decongestants.

My mom warned me about beans and veggies, but I'm vegetarian and that would have sucked! All the articles I read said there's no connection and for us, there wasn't.

@OldpuebloJenn: Almost the same here, except I was still nursing 1x/day when I got pregnant. She weaned when I was about 10 weeks along, and it took me a couple more weeks to realize I could eat peppermint again. I've been crushing it!

Ugh, so many things. My LO was fussy and a poor sleeper at the beginning, then quickly developed classic MSPI signs that didn't go away after I eliminated all dairy and then soy. I ended up on an elimination diet which was based mostly on my observations from a food diary along with some suggestions from our pediatrician. In the end, it was almost a full year off of dairy, soy, eggs, corn, treenuts, and peanuts, plus several month-long stints of eliminating other stuff like gluten, beef, and legumes.

For a future LO, I am not going try not to be so quick to take things out of my diet though because I truly think that at least half the stuff I eliminated would have been fine. But since our LO's MSPI symptoms never fully cleared, our pediatrician wouldn't let me try to re-introduced anything into my diet until she was a year old.

I did a little experiment in the beginning to see if she was sensitive to crociferous vegetables and caffeine (I basically ate both every day for two weeks and then cut both out for two weeks). And she was sensitive to both. She also hard a really hard time farting so every morning and night I'd spend about 10 or so minutes helping her pass gas.

But after she was six months old I was able to eat anything without a reaction from her.

I don't limit what I eat when breastfeeding, unless something seems to make baby gassy or uncomfortable. For what it's worth, I eat fish about once a week. Baby has never had any problem with it in my milk, but developed an allergy to eating it herself at 7 months.

I stayed away from chocolate, caffeine, and orange juice for the first 8 months or so. They were reflux babies and those things made them spit up worse. Around 8 months, their spit up lessened considerably, so I started introducing those things back in.

I was paranoid and thought broccoli made my first really upset and uncomfortable, because she started screaming the first night I ate a lot of it... But it lasted for like 3 months so I don't think t was the broccoli. I have been told many times that most foods don't bother babies.

That said I notice if I eat a lot of black beans it does seem to make this baby spit up more, so I try not to have a lot at once or in a row (like I space out the leftovers more). Might just be in my head. Luckily caffeine doesn't affect her!!

Nope! Nothing at all. BF for over 2 years. I don't see why you would avoid anything, they aren't sharing your bloodstream. You can eat anything you want except I would avoid the big fish (mercury) and you only need to avoid specific things if your LO is allergic (such as soy or cows milk protein). I did not limit caffeine or alcohol either (alcohol I watched closely the first 3 months but didn't after that). Obviously, I didn't get wasted or anything though.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I guess I wouldn't go crazy adjusting your diet just yet. I mean, newborns have very immature digestive systems and I would try to avoid anything that will be stressful to you. I can think of a single reason not to eat fish dip, for example. You could try not eating broccoli I guess. Have you looked at kellymom?
