I still scoop our cat boxes & wash my hands obsessively. Both cats are old & we'd had them for many years before I got pregnant. Neither cat has gone outside for many many years & only the eggs of the parasite are infective, shed shortly after infection, meaning the chances of our cats being infected were low & of transmitting even lower. I think there are more concerning sources like gardening, raw meats, unwashed fruits/vegetables & unpasteurized milk than our cats. ...So I kept the duty.

I was told that most people who have a cat have likely already been exposed. My DH offered to take it over ... LO is 1, and I still haven't scooped the box since getting my BFP. It's awesome.

I've cleaned it a few times wearing gloves and made sure to wash my hands really well afterwards. If you read up on it, it's only if your cats go outside and it's not airborne.

I did, and it's definitely the best part of being pregnant! We used to switch off feeding and litter cleaning duties before I got pregnant, and I didn't mind doing the litter at all, but it's nice not to have to worry about it.

My husband was going away for a couple of weeks early in the pregnancy and I asked our family doctor if we should hire the cat sitter to come and do the litter for me. He said it's fine to do myself assuming I'm not actually touching the feces, so the few times I've had to do it myself I've just had rubber gloves on.

Mostly, but a couple times DH was out of town for several days at a time so I had no choice. I used a mask and gloves and washed REEEALLY well afterward. And our cat is indoor only so the risks were low.

It became Hubs's job well before I got pregnant. We were actively trying and our cat got toxoplasmosis infection in her eye. The vet asked if i was pregnant and I said no but we're trying, and she told me to make it his job from then on. Nonetheless, I still had a positive toxo screen and had to get a second set of labs done. It was super scary and stressful waiting for that second set of labs to come back! Don't risk it. Your husband can clean the box for a few months!

No, my dr told me to wear a mask and gloves, but said it was basically no risk if they were indoors. Honestly, my cats have never been outside (spoiled Persians) so I clean it sometimes. DH does it a lot because the smell gets to me

Not for a while. I was really careful about it by using a mask and gloves. My cats never went outside. But then I talked to my doctor about it when I was around 16 weeks or so and she recommended I stay away regardless. We ended up having both of my cats tested for Toxo and they were negative, so I kept cleaning it out.

@smith: I'm ashamed to say that I did stop when I got my BFP for my DD, and then just kind of made it my DH's task permanently? I don't think I was that freaked out about toxoplasmosis (my cats are both indoor), but I really hated scooping the litter box. I'm assuming he'll catch on someday and realize I can trade off again...

It seems like most expecting women are pretty vigilant about staying away from their cats' litter boxes, but I've read that the risk of toxoplasmosis - a parasitic infection that can be transmitted through infected cat poop - is super low if your cat never goes outside.

So, tell me: Did you stop cleaning your cat's litter box when you found out you were pregnant?
