I didn't switch, exactly, but I did go from using an iphone (that wasn't mine) to getting a samsung galaxy s2 and I much prefer androids. I like how you can set them up the best way for you and I love the back, home, and menu buttons.

@pui: yeah, that's what I meant! :) not really fair to compare an original droid with a newer iPhone.

@mrs. wagon: That's not completely accurate... hardware makes a big difference to the speed and smoothness of the interface. I think it's only really fair to compare iPhones to higher end or newer Android phones. There are a lot of crappy phones with Android installed on them.

Let's all remember that you're comparing the iPhone to quite a large number of phones! Samsung, lg, HTC, Motorola... What you're really comparing is the droid os to iOS.

@Shutterbug: I wasn't comparing it, just saying I hope it's improved, because my laptop's one was pretty bad lol. I had an Acer.

That said, I'm a little worried about the "tap anywhere at the bottom and homescreen"! I'm concerned it would either open to anyone or need you to hold longer than a "tap" to scan your finger to actually secure your phone. We'll see how it works when it comes out.

@pui: so did my DH (IBM/Lenovo?) but just like it's not fair to compare technology from 2 years ago, it's not fair to compare your 4 year old computer :) That being said, I'll probably wait a few weeks just to be sure it's not a colossal failure!

I switched from an original Motorola Droid (bought in 2009) to an iPhone 4s. I know I can't compare phones from two years apart, but I just haaaated the Droid. The camera was terrible, the app store was super awkward, and the whole interface was just very clunky to me. I plan on upgrading to an iPhone 5s, mainly for the familiarity, the camera, and the fingerprint sensor (no more passcodes!!)

@Mrs. High Heels: Google Drive includes 15gigs free and you can upgrade to 100gigs for $60/year, which if I am not mistaken is much more competitive than DropBox. Google Drive also syncs with all your devices automatically, you don't need to plug anything in (I am always editing photos on my computer, then putting them in to Drive so that I can put them on Instagram from my tablet). Also it's part of my Google account so nothing could ever get lost once it's on there.

@pui: I am in loooove with dropbox (I even pay $99/year for extra storage with them)... right now all my photos do sync in dropbox, but I have to actually plug my phone to my comp to make it happen. With droid I didn't have to do anything and everything was cloud synced automatically, which is pretty awesome if you accidentally drop your phone into the toilet one day and didn't get a chance to back it up yet! ;)

@Mrs. High Heels: You could use Google Drive instead if DropBox since it sounds like you already have a Google Account! As far as I know though it doesn't automatically put photos you take up there... but look that up maybe there is a way to set it up so it does!

@Mrs. Bee: I do have the dropbox app! But don't you still have to sync it to your comp manually? My droid pictures automatically update to G+ in real time. Like in cloud somewhere. Not sure how it works but I don't have to hook up my phone to anything and the next thing I know I see my pics in my G+ account.

I switched from an Android over to the iPhone and although I loved the bigger screen on droid phones, the iPhone has won me over with its camera. That is all that matters to me. The Android takes clear pictures, but only if you hold still enough. Maybe the newer droids are better, but the iPhone shutter speed is amazing... combined with the many many awesome photo editing apps on the iPhone.... i'm staying put!

I do miss how seamless the droid integrates all things Google though. It was so much easier to find contacts, contact numbers, email addresses, etc with the droid... and I loved the intuitiveness of the google calendar sync. It was also great that it automatically backed up all my photos and videos into G+ so I never worried about losing them.

I've had a 3-4 different iPhones for the past 5 years... My current iPhone 5 cracked and underwent a lot of water damage a month ago, but I can still use it. Debated going over to the Samsung, but held out til today to hear about the iPhone 5S. I watched live commentary on the announcement and have decided... I am definitely getting the 5S!!

Picture quality is huge for us, and there's something about the sensor and lens Apple has in its phones... Even with less megapixels, I think iPhone pics come out far superior a majority of the time. This new camera looks outstanding, as usual!

Bigger screen isn't a big deal for me... We have an iPad mini :)

@MrsCB: Just because there is no discount for buying your phone elsewhere doesn't mean they don't charge you extra when you get a "free" phone with them with a contract. It just means you get ripped off if you do buy your own phone. They don't give you a free phone, they make money off them one way or another. It's just a sales tactic to include the cost of the phone in to your monthly bill because then you feel like you did get a free phone.

I have an iPhone for my personal phone and an Android for work. I HATE the Android. It might just be the phone (HTC Inspire), but I find it to be clunky, buggy, and just basically not nice to use. It has had major issues that forced factory resets a couple times in the 1.5 years I've had it, and the battery life is terrible. The keypad never seems to work right so I make typos all the time, and the autocorrect is even more irritating than the iPhone's (didn't think that was possible!). Basically, if I could do it over, I never would have gotten that as my work phone. I'm not an iJunkie, and for a long time was unimpressed by most Apple products, but I find that my iPhone is pleasurable to use and my android is Just. Not.

ETA: I have an iPhone 4 -- not even 4S! -- so it's actually quite a bit older than my Android yet still works ten times better despite far heavier use and abuse. So I'm comparing older models on both sides, not the new shiny ones. I still would emphatically not recommend an HTC.

@pui: I'm not sure how it works in Canada, but here my contracted monthly rate is the same regardless of whether I buy myself a new phone or not. So there's no reduction in not getting a subsidized phone. I would just have to pay for the phone on TOP of what my monthly bill already costs.
