We were required to join orchestra or band and take private lessons.</p> <p>I chose violin along with a few of my best friends, and while there was a time period in middle school I wanted to quit and resented having to study and take lessons, I am so glad they made us stick with it. It paid for a lot during college when I played with a quartet in weddings, and I am part of a local string orchestra now and love it. </p> <p>My kid(s) will definitely be playing an instrument! I will really encourage it, because I think it is a good thing in so many ways. Sight reading, improv, being able to swing, and improvising and harmonizing melodies. I grew up with musician parents so it has been a big part of my life.</p> <p>I grew up attending concerts of all sorts- from symphony and orchestra to reggae and rock- we still do; so music will be a big part of LO's life. I had the opportunity to play at Powell Symphony Hall here in St Louis when I was a senior in high school, and it was an amazing experience. I sing too, and do musical theatre. DH plays a bunch of different things, but he comes from a long line of musicians.</p> <p>C will totally be playing an instrument. We'll probably start her on piano in a couple years when she's old enough to take lessons and then let her pick what she wants to do once she gets to school age. Sang chorus in elementary school and had decent pitch until my voice broke. Now even though I can hear the notes in my head, when I sing the pitch is all over the place! It's embarrassing and now I only sing for my undiscerning and loving children.</p> <p>I wasn't really into music, but did it for my parents. I won't push music onto the kids, but if they express interest... then sure, they can take classes.</p> <p>Did you take any music lessons growing up? Do you want your kids to? </p>
