Unisom is completely safe and I take it occasionally for sleep I'm 10w. Used it from 20w on last time for insane pregnancy insomnia. Some nights no matter how tired I am (and I'm exhausted and don't nap during the day or anything) I can't sleep. It's hormones. I never asked about Benadryl but know that it just agitates me so I don't use it.

Thanks again for all the advice. My NP said Benadryl would be ok in the first trimester - luckily (I think?!) I've been so tired by bedtime that I don't think I'll need to try it for a while. Chamomile tea, which was recommended too, is also a great idea - asked DH to pick some up at the store today to have just in case.

I was wondering if people realized this but Unisom contains diphenhydramine which is another name for benadryl. It's the same medication....
Unisom also contains doxylamine so if anything I would think benadryl is better since it's one medication instead of two.

Unisom and Benadryl are the same thing. I did take Benadryl during the first trimester, to help me sleep and to combat the nausea early on. I have continued to take it as needed throughout this pregnancy!

I started taking Unisom/B6 every night in the first tri for nausea. For weeks 6 and 7, I took the SleepGels by accident (which have the same ingredient as benadryl) then switched to SleepTabs at 8 weeks. My OB said both are perfectly safe and are on the approved meds list.

I think technically it is safe, but I always tried to avoid medication as much as possible (even allergy meds) during the first trimester.

Even though you haven't had your appointment yet, if you called your doctor's office they would probably take a message and have the doctor or a nurse call you back and tell you what they recommend. But like others have said, my midwife recommended I take B6 with unisom - it was actually for my morning sickness but helped with sleep too.

I checked our German medical database and diphenhydramine (the active ingredient in benadryl) is save for the first trimester. But I'd also try going natural if at all possible. Besides the already mentioned chamomile and lavender you could also try Bach flowers which works for anxiety related things really well.

I also took unisom (doxylamine succinate) and B6 for nausea, and insomnia. I think I started taking it around 7 weeks, and took it most nights until about 15 weeks.

I took unisom. I originally got it to take for morning sickness, but ended up using it for sleep! (And got a zofran prescription for the nausea!). It worked well for me, but everyone is different! Oh how I would love to be able to just take some and sleep again! (dealing with DS's 4 month sleep regression over here!). Haha

@Oliviapope: my OB said it's safe to take throughout pregnancy, but I would do so sparingly if at all. Try some warm milk, relaxing meditation music, have your SO give you a back rub. I have a terrible time sleeping so I feel your pain. I don't drink herbal teas either because of all the horror stories you hear about how they can effect the baby or contractions. But if you listened to everything people say we wouldn't be allowed to breathe would we?

I'm trying not to google too much or drive myself crazy. I'm about 5 or 6 weeks I think? My first appt is next Tuesday. I haven't slept well at all for the last 3 or 4 nights.

My friend is pregnant and takes a Benadryl a few nights a week to help sleep. I'd love to ask her if she took it in the first trimester, but we haven't told anyone yet.

I did a board search but could only really find suggestions for bees who were later in pregnancy. I see that Benadryl is usually approved by OBs for use in pregnancy, but can't figure out if it's only after a certain point Before this, I used to take a couple Calms Forte most nights of the week, but I can't figure out whether it's ok to take that, and figure I'll ask at my appt. Did you take Benadryl in the first trimester to help sleep?
