I took it for all-day nausea with my first baby. I think I've taken it twice, maybe three times, with this pregnancy (but I had other things going on making me nauseous too.) It helped and both my OB and GI (although I'm about to change OBs) are ok with it in pregnancy. It does cause constipation. I limited it to once a day my first pregnancy, and picked the time of day I'd need it most.

@erinpye: Yup, same here. I'm in the HG boat. I am taking other medications (anti-nausea patch) and taking zofran and reglan if I still feel sick. The combo of meds I'm taking now actually make me feel like myself.

@dc yoga bee: definitely. I'm done having babies, but curious.

It's hard because for women with HG, it becomes a matter of survival. I literally couldn't stop throwing up until I went to the hospital and got an IV to hydrate me and give me Zofran. I was then instructed to take it religiously and stay on top of it. It kind of becomes a game of weighing which is worse-- and for me, inability to stop vomiting to the point of severe dehydration was worse.

I'm late to the party on this, but agree with @BadgerMom: do plenty of research first! One of the clients I write for is a legal resource that deals primarily with Zofran lawsuits and settlements, and there has been a lot come out about it lately. The drug was never properly tested on pregnant patients before its approval, and it is possible that some related effects aren't discovered until the child is a teen.

Best of luck with this, though! I know it can certainly provide relief for some when nothing else works.

I take half a 8mg tablet twice a day, which isn't much but it does help keep the waves of nausea from overcoming me. I find it lasts usually about 6 hours and helps me keep my food down. This time i've found the constipation hasn't been too bad, it was horrendous in my previous pregnancy.

Both my RE and OB isn't concerned about zofran. I believe they said they are more worried about class D and class X drugs. Zofran is a class B

I don't remember when I started taking zofran, but I think it was around 8 weeks.

@erinpye: Yes! I'm a lawyer and have been closely following this! I wasn't advised of any birth defect possibilities until after I'd been taking it for 5-6 weeks. I talked to the midwives about the benefits vs. risks, and they cited studies that there actually haven't been any associated birth defects. It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out.

I had HG and took it both pregnancies. They are coming out with a class action suit because taking it before 12 weeks is maybe associated with some slightly elevated risks of defects. My kids are perfectly healthy, and I couldn't have done it without zofran, but I didn't start taking it until after 10 weeks each time.

Zofran definitely took away my nausea and enabled me to eat without getting sick!
It is incredibly constipation, but taking with a stool softener and lots of water helped.

I took it in both pregnancies and it curbed my nausea so that I never got to the point of vomiting. Both of my babies are perfectly healthy. Certainly have the conversation with the midwife and see what they suggest. It doesn't hurt to talk about it.

And yes, it is constipating. But making sure you are drinking enough and taking a stool softener (colace) consistently will help. I didn't have any issues the first time. Second time I wasn't as faithful with the Colace and paid the price.

@simplyfelicity: I threw up 10x in 30 minutes. They were scared that much throwing up would send me into labor at 20 weeks!

I've been on Zofran and Diclegis since 8 weeks, and I'm 35 weeks today. If I'm a mere 10 minutes late with my dose I will feel nauseas. They diagnosed me with a true case of HG at 8 weeks.

@Keybee: I would have an honest conversation with your midwife about the risks and benefits and your own situation. I hope you're over morning sickness before the cruise, which sounds awesome, btw!

Thank you @badgermom, that is something to consider.

@simplyfelicity thank you for that feedback. The nausea is what bothers me most often, the vomiting has been limited to a few times nightly, but I always feel nauseous.

I have been taking unisom, which is the anti histamine in Diceglis and it helps a lot. The B-6 makes me throw up, however.

@BadgerMom: Is correct that newer studies are showing greater risks to Zofran than originally thought.

I took it in my last pregnancy with no complications, but told my OB that I want to avoid it this time around. She said that basically studies are showing that they need more studies and they no longer feel 100% confident that Zofran is safe in pregnancy. And the constipation it causes is NO JOKE.

I'm taking Unisom + B6 right now and it's working OK. I sitll have bad days, but so far I can manage through.

I have taken zofran, reglan and diclegis. The medications work differently for different people. There are class action lawsuits re: Zofran, but they seem to not be substantiated by research. I have HG, so mine was extreme but I have taken all the drugs throughout two pregnancies with two healthy babies.

I am not a fan of Zofran. If I understand correctly, it curbs vomiting but not nausea. I would much rather throw up than feel that horrible nausea all day. I much prefer Diceglis. Plus, Zofran gave me the worst constipation. So not worth it to me.

You might want to do some research first. I haven't really had a chance to look into it, but I think they're coming out with some findings that Zofran is having some negative side effects, specifically possibly linked to babies with cleft palette. I really don't know how common it is, or if it only really applies for people who end up taking a lot of it, but I've seen some things in the news about it.

ETA. My OB recommended a combo of Unisom and vitamin B6. My morning sickness never got bad enough to try, but might be worth looking into.

I was put on Diclegis which is an anti-histamine and B6.

It's a pill you take at night. It worked for me for about 3 days before I threw up the pill after taking it.

I was then put on Zofran and Reglan. Worked for me for about a week. When I started throwing up the pills, my RE suggested I take Phenegan which is a suppository. That worked a few days.

When I continued throwing up, I was put in the hospital for fluids and for them to get the pharmacy to find something that worked. Since I had trouble taking pills, I'm now on Transderm, which is a patch I put behind my ear and I take zofran and reglan on top if I feel nauseous still.

So far that 3 medication combination works for me. I'm still nauseous on certain days but for the most part haven't thrown up in a while. (Well, I threw up last night.)

I'm hoping that I continue taking the patch and hopefully soon I'll no longer have to take the Zofran and Reglan pills.

I don't have HM, thank goodness, but I am still miserably sick. It's been 4 almost 5 weeks and its evolving, but not getting any better. I have had a few people recommend taking Zofran, but my midwife (because they are into the natural) isn't offering it. Should I ask? Does it help? How bad are the risks?
