Great! I feel less guilty now. LO does the sign for more; he learned that one quickly because my husband taught it while singing the baby's favorite action song. I want to teach all done, and please. And that'll probably be all!

Nope - it honestly just seemed like extra work to me. Plus my mom watches my boys. I'd rather them soak in the Spanish language from her.

We did from six to ten months but then she learned the words for the signs I taught her before she used the signs so I quit. A few months late she randomly started signing. I wish I had stuck with it.

we didn't do it. i got too lazy. he learned more and all done at daycare, but the time between when he began to sign those and actually say the words was maybe a couple of months?

ETA: our son is not advanced verbally, so that wasn't a reason to ditch the sign language. it was really just that i didn't feel it necessary to add something to our plates.

We do some. We started around 8 months but she didn't really catch on until around a year. She does milk, more, eat, and all done. DH is currently trying to teach her mama, dada, and bath. She can say all of those words but still likes to sign as she says them!

We only did more and all done. I think I started showing them to him around 8 months. I had kinda given up on it/never really got too into it, when one day, LO signed more to me after eating all the watermelon on his tray. I gave him more and sure enough, he gobbled it up. Now at 18 months, we just use more and all done. I was skeptical, but I love him being able to tell me he wants more of a certain food or that he's done eating. Part of me wishes I had tried to teach him more signs, but I'll take what I can get.

We did it, but LO never really picked up on it, but she did start talking super early, so signing wasn't really necessary. Once she started to communicate verbally we focused on that and expanding her words.

We started at 6 months to help him express himself and it has helped! Plus, DH is hard of hearing and while we don't use ASL in daily conversation (DH doesnt know it well enoug),, it's something we all want to be more familiar with in the future should DH's hearing continue to deteriorate.

If you start on the early side and keep watching your LO's hands, you might find that he/she is "hand babbling" before actually signing! Just like with spoken language, there's a lot of babble and imitation.

This site has a great breakdown of when someone fluent in ASL saw each stage of language in her child:

We did some. I started with milk, more, all done, and eat. Then we just taught her ones that were fun for us- she signs love and coffee. :)
I think we started around when she started solids at six months but she didn't consistantly do them back until closer to a year. I'm glad we did because I think it's helpful for her to have a way to communicate a few things, and since we are still nursing at 17 months, I prefer her to do the sign for milk to grabbing at my shirt!

We did not. Daycare taught just a handful of signs. We didn't mind and encouraged it at home. But I wanted all the instruction from us to be about verbal communication. I know studies have shown that baby signing doesn't delay speech, but regardless I didn't want to risk any speech delay and I didn't really see the need for signing.

Around 6 months I started with a few, but inconsistently. At 8 months (2 weeks ago) I started doing it with a lot more vigor. We do milk, eat (for solids), more and all done. I throw in mama, daddy, dog and sleep too, but not as regularly. They get excited when I sign milk now, so I think they are starting to recognize it?

DS did milk, more and eat. I started teaching him milk first at a few months old and the other two when he was eating solids. It took him a while to use them, but it was helpful to at least have these until he could talk. At 21 months he still uses more.

We starting working on "more" and "finished" as soon as we started on solids. It took 2-ish months of us just signing to him before he started doing them back. Those were the only two we were ever really consistent with, though, and now he has words for both of those so he doesn't sign much at all anymore at almost 12 months. So, I definitely think it was worth it for the 5-ish months that he was consistently signing, and I kind of wish we would have done more!

I tried to teach her signs, but the only thing that ever stuck was "milk". Which...is pretty valuable, heh. It really needs to be reinforced all day long or at daycare, and she was only getting it at home.
