With DS, I don't like the nickname that most would think of for it. DH on the other hand loves it and occasionally call him that. I don't mind him being called it, but I won't call him it.

With DD, we had two names picked out and we had a preferred nickname with both of them. We call her a lot by the nickname.

We definitely are thinking about potential nicknames - surprisingly, about half the people who ask if we have name, then ask if we have a nickname - and the name we have chosen is not long!

But, I also think you don't have much control over them - either other kids come up with them or people just shorten them - when my parents moved to IN, their neighbors always called my mother Mar (pronounced like mare) and her name is Mary.

I didn't think R's name had any nicknames so I was hesitant to choose it. Our babysitter's daughter came up with R's nickname. It's longer than her name!

We love DD's most common nickname just as much as her full name, so it was definitely important for us. Geraldine was a contender - in honor of my father - but we couldn't think of a single nickname we would have even tolerated. Middle name for # 2, perhaps.

I chose Ellie because it was the nickname I wanted for Elizabeth and I didn't want anyone calling her "Liz." Lorelei was almost a Nell, but we thought about "Nellie" and Nellie and Ellie sounds like something off Hee-Haw, so no thank you. We thought Lorelei might be a Laurel, which we like, but as of now, she is "Lita" (pronounced Lee-tah).

Yep! I originally wanted names that didn't have nicknames since I hated having a full name and a nickname growing up, especially since my nickname had a different first letter.

Ended up choosing WJ's name to be able to call him Junior or RJ. Ended up choosing LMW's name, basically choosing the nickname but formally naming her the full version of the name. And people who know her full name always call her by a more common nickname. Doesn't really bother me, even though I thought it would!

Only to the extent that there weren't any easily rhyming nicknames that we disliked. Reminded me of a flashback scene in The Simpsons where Homer and Marge were trying to decide what to name Bart:

(After Homer rejects other names for boys based on rhyming nicknames)
Marge: What about Bart?
Homer: Let's see. Bart, dart, cart, e-art. Nope can't see any problems with that.
(Missing fart due to only 4 fingers).

I sort of wanted to give him a name that would have a recognizable nickname (we tossed around Will/William for a while) because I'm Sarah, and I don't really have a nickname. SO wasn't so into it, because he's David...I call him Dave, but a GF he had in HS started calling him Davey and so did all of his friends. They all still call him that to this day, despite his pleas against it--he hates it.

I call Evan "Ev" sometimes, but I can't really think of another nickname. But having one ended up not being a serious criteria/consideration (we had too many of those already).

Yes very much. I wouldn't give a kid a name with a nickname I didn't like. I don't believe in policing the nicknames that people use for your kids, so I just made sure to like any for the name I chose.

That being said, I planned to use one nickname for my daughter, and ended up with a totally different one. One that I for site would not have picked as a primary name. Sometimes it just happens.

I'm weird about this topic, I grew up with a nickname as my full name and I hated getting asked "what's your real name" so I decided my child will always have a "full" name.

We didn't choose our LOs names based on nicknames, but decided early on that we wanted them to called by their entire first names. And then WE gave them non-name related nicknames...they're silly and they've stuck because both boys answer to them. Can't figure out if it's good or bad.
