LO slept through the night from the time she was about 10 wks old for nearly 3 glorious months...then we went on vacation and she quit on me - call me an eternal optimist but it never occurred to me that this might happen, and part of me almost wishes she'd just stuck with one wake up and never STTN.
It feels like such a tease to get great sleep and then have it taken away (although I know I should be grateful for the sleep I got).

@Mrs. Yoyo: Thank you for telling me that! I'll cling to that, hoping that she will eventually STTN. We actually made her CIO last night. It only lasted for 10 min and she passed out for the rest of the night. I, however, didn't get back to sleep for another 2 hours. Oh, today is going to be painful :-)

Yes! DS is 6 months this week and wakes up every three hours at night. He's never STTN.

A lady I bumped in to told me her oldest was 2.5 years when he first slept through, and that happened the very night she went into labour with her second baby!

@MsLipGloss: ha I am convinced most people are telling lies about STTN. Or they only mention the STTN victories and make you think that is what they get all the time, when in reality it is not most of the time.

@mediagirl: @MsLipGloss: I agree. My mom says I slept through at 11 weeks. But, turns out she put me down at 10 and I would sleep until 5. My son did 7 hour stretches starting around 4 months, so it's not that far off. But NO night wakings? Not so much.

My IRL friends all had to sleep train or had night wakings until 9 or so months (some, even with sleep training).

@MediaGirl: Phooey on that! I have a hard time with judgmental parents . . . they of all people should understand that sometimes you are just at the mercy of the current with your LO.

Oh, and I *totally* think that most parents (in other settings) at least slightly exaggerate the amount of time their LO(s) sleep/slept through the night.

@winniebee: really. I had no experience with kids before our own. Now that she's here, though, it seems like everyone's kid except ours (that we know IRL) sleeps through the night. And they all look at me like I am doing something wrong b/c she's not. :-/

@Matador: I thought life was great on the nights when there was just one post-midnight wakeup . . . and now we are back to 4-6 wakes per night (including pre- and post-midnight wakeups). I think we are currently experiencing the 4 month sleep regression though.

@Bao: My LO is also 4 months (16 weeks this week), and the longest she has slept so far is 4.5 hours, and that happened once, in the middle of the day. ((Hugs)), doll.

@WinnieBee: I also totally think it is luck of the draw. There are other factors, too, (like birth weight, etc.), but I really just think it mostly comes down to luck.

Hells yes. The long sleep stretches at 2 and 3 months old made me think we were definitely close to zero night wakings soon. At 8 months old there seems to be no end in sight to the (usually about 3 or 4) nightwakinngs, although he did have one night with none, just to tease me. It seems nightwakings are actually more common than I think most people let on.

But I also didn't realize how my own body would adjust to nightwakings, so they aren't as big of a deal as I thought they would be.

Having said that, when he does finally STTN I will be so happy.

Yes but I thought that because she used to sleep seven to eight hours straight before waking up to eat. Now she's waking up like six to seven times a night and I don't know why. When her cold passes, we're sleep training.

Nope. LO's almost 5 months, was born on the small size. She's always been iffy on the bottle and now that she's starting daycare, I think she'll be up a couple of times at least tonight! Hopefully once she gets used to daycare she'll drink more from the bottle...or if not, maybe it's time to see if she'll drink from a straw or sippy cup.

I don't think I had any idea when she would STTN. She's 6.5 months and sleeps 12 hours with 2-3 feedings, which she doesn't really wake up for but grunts/moans until she gets a bottle.

We are starting to concentrate on trying to get her to eat more during the day as I think she has really needing the night sessions (she has been taking as much as 4-6 ounces in a night feeding, which makes me think she wasn't getting enough during the day).

No. DH, SIL, and SIL's kids weren't good sleepers at all, and I just assumed LO would be the same... even though I've always been an excellent sleeper. From months 2-4 she slept a consistent 10-12 hours every night. Now she sleeps 11-12 hours without waking most nights, but we do get the occasional wake-up. Traveling and sickness throw her off really easily.

My mom always said that my sister and I fully slept through the night by 3 months, so I thought DD would be the same. She is quite a good nighttime sleeper at 9 months, but she still wakes up when she's sick, uncomfortable, cold... or if she knocks her pacifiers out of her crib. It's tough.
