I have heard cautionary tales against doing any kind of sleep training when LO is in the process of sleep regressions or cognitive growth spurts. Since he is on the brink of several new things (standing, etc) you may find you need to ride it out until he has got them figured out. We transitioned our daughter earlier, but she definitely experienced sleep issues before every major milestone. Whatever you decide,!good luck! :goodluck:

our experience was similar to @macintosh:

LO slept in the rock n play in our room, then we tried the pack n play in our room and he wouldn't settle. we went through a few months of co-sleeping. then around ten months he was tossing and turning and no one was getting good rest. we started putting him down for naps in his crib with music he liked and he didn't cry much so we tried night time sleep after that. he sometimes cried for a few minutes, but never for long.

My DS started sleeping through the night right around 9 months. I didn't do any hardcore sleep training, but there was definitely some crying.

I used to hold him til he fell asleep every single time. For a long time it meant cosleeping, but around 8-9 months it meant giving a bottle to soothe him when he woke at night, then holding him til he fell asleep, then transferring to the crib. I would sometimes fall asleep on the couch holding him in an effort to avoid bringing him into my bed. I liked cosleeping but he woke up way too frequently as he got older. I was exhausted.

Then one late night, he would not settle in my arms. He was literally flipping around, trying to get away. I probably tried for over an hour until I was ready to pass out. I decided to give up and put him in his crib, since he was crying anyway. I had tried before, but he was finally ready. After maybe 10 minutes of crying, he stopped. He put himself to sleep. It was a miracle! But he just wasn't ready all the times I tried before that. It's totally possible to do it without agonizing stretches of crying. :goodluck:

So we sleep trained at 7m but it was a long process involving night weaning. By 9m he was STTN, but there was a regression then for a few days. I'd just try to do what you want to do for a few nights.

People sometimes slam sleep training but it was so necessary for us. Plus, when he did have wake ups afterwards I felt like they was something unusual going on and that he needed extra help. If he was waking all the I would've been clueless.

DS is now 9 months old and in the middle of...everything. I would say he's in the middle of a Wonder Week...but it's also working on standing and cruising, teeth, etc. Putting him down in his crib at night has been taking on the shape of an Olympic event (if reading books, singing, and bouncing a wriggling sleep-fighting boy were an event) as I attempt to get him drowsy, and then put him down in the crib *preferably* awake and then pat/hum/shush/whatever it takes. When I go to bed, I take him with me and we co-sleep (makes night-feeding easier, which I honestly don't mind, if we're talking 2-3 per night, depending on whether you count a "dream feed" between 9:30-10 at night).

I would be interested in trying to let him "stay down" in his crib...but also am worried this could result in more frequent night wakings due to separation anxiety...or whatever developmental milestones are supposed to make 8-11 months such an undesirable time for sleep training or "nudging".

Did you try to transition your older infant to sleeping in their own space? If so, was it successful, despite what the "experts" say?

ETA: For fun, a poll!
