I had a girlfriend show me how to use hers. Then when I was 39w I started using my pump to try to induce labor (nipple stimulation can induce labor).

We didn't open ours because of the broken seal, no return policy. We got ours at BRU, which also had a 3 month return policy (which I think is silly if it's unopened and I had the receipt). We returned at exactly 3 months unopened because BF wasn't for us.

@Mrsdaredevil: Same! I'm afraid that if I open mine and am unable to breastfeed/pump, I will have wasted a ton of money. Would rather be able to return it if necessary.

I am waiting until I know I need it/want to use it before i open it up!

Mine was my sis' and she came over to help me put things together 3 days pp- it was a big help! And I would def recommend sterilizing everything before baby comes, there are sooo many pieces.

I just got my accessory kit yesterday - so I'm going to open it and get everything sterilized. Then figure it out at the hospital.
I sterilized my bottles and pacifiers this weekend. A 5-minute soak in boiling water and you're good to go!

@cvbee: I hope to not use bottles for the first month - however, want to start building a supply of frozen milk (pumping at the end of feedings) because I will be returning to work and would like to have him on breastmilk thereafter. Also, would like to do some things like go to dinner, or leave him for a few hours after he is old enough so want a stockpile! Probably naive to think I'll want to pump on top of breastfeeding....

I'm 20 days PP and still havent opened the box. Our hospital recommends not introducing bottles until at 4-8 weeks old, so as not to confuse the baby about how to eat. So I am waiting until then. I suppose I could be pumping and storing now, but I don't see the need and feel good about not tricking my body into making any extra milk.

If you have issues, I think they will help you out in the hospital with the breastfeeding. I don't think it's something you need to worry about.

I'm getting mine used from a good friend and will just have to buy new tubing so since it won't be new and in the box yes I will probably try to figure out how it works before the baby comes so I'm ready to go.

@mediagirl: It costs a lot to rent it too. I spent $100 for a week, because you also have to buy the separate parts. If I could do it again, I'd have bought it. Hope that makes you feel a little better!

I don't know what to do. My hospital doesn't rent pumps so, we would have to buy one if I want one (which I do). I hate not having that option because it means having to waste the money on a pump if pumping doesn't work out.

I didn't. After I gave birth, breastfeeding didn't come naturally (LO had poor latch and I had no milk...I didn't even have colostrum!)...So after a few hours of no success and already bleeding nipples, we rented on from the hospital for the duration of my stay (24 hours)...And then again for 10 days...After those 10 days, we went ahead and bought the Ameda Purely Yours (which is what the hospital uses).

Did you open up your breast pump and try to figure out how it works before birth? If you didn't, do you wish you had? I guess I'm wondering if it makes sense to open it up, etc....what if my milk doesn't come in and I can't BF at all?

Thoughts?
