My dog usually tells me when someone is coming to the door so I can get there before the doorbell.

That being said.... our doorbell broke on it's own and I'm in no hurry to get it fixed.

@prettylizy: this is exactly our problem. Ugh the number of naps that get disturbed. But we have a 90 pound dog and most people won't come too close with his bark (I'm not sure he has a bite but he's loud and scary).

No, when LO was a newborn he would sleep through anything. Now is a different story though- if someone starts hammering during nap time I get so annoyed because he is such a light sleeper.

@prettylizy: Same! My three dogs go absolutely nuts whenever they hear anything.

I put up a sign saying pls don't ring the doorbell, but the dogs still bark when they hear someone at the door. They go less crazy than if the doorbell rang, though. Then all hell would break loose.

Good thing is, L got used to all the noise when she was a newborn so now she can sleep pretty well even when there's a ruckus.

We never bothered with a sign and LO has never woken up as a result of the doorbell being rung. I've read in a few different places that it's better for babies to be exposed to different noises whilst sleeping so that they don't become dependent on silence in order to fall asleep or stay asleep.

I don't TRY to make lots of noise when LO is sleeping, but I also don't go out of my way to stifle any noise either. If I need to vacuum whilst she's napping, so be it - it has yet to wake her. Same thing with DH doing the leaf blowing etc. She's a fantastic sleeper and I think it's because she doesn't wake up for inadvertent noises.

ETA: Like a PP, we do make things a bit quieter at night as we want her to know the difference between night and day, but during the day, it's normal activities for us.

We don't get a lot of doorbell ringing, but my philosophy is that the baby needs to learn the difference between day and night... During the day, we don't keep our voices down, we use the vacuum, etc. So the doorbell would be ok. At night we keep quiet. Babies can sleep through a lot anyway!

We didn't have visitors until two weeks, and even then, we're only now having most people at six weeks and older. We were busy! As for deliveries, etc., they just knocked and LO slept through it. The few visitors we had, LO got passed around anyway. Oh well!

@MamaMoose: That is a VERY good point...One reason I don't answer the door if I don't know who it is, is because of that story I saw on tv of some poor preg getting held hostage while some crazy woman tried to cut her baby out of her tummy. So I need to be equally careful about her being outside of the womb!

@mrbee: We have a chihuahua and he barks even before someone has a chance to knock or ring the bell - he just knows there's a stranger out there! I think they'd hear his little yap and not be convinced- loll!!!

@BabyBoecksMom: Lol, I'm definitely not ruling out a shocker device if a sign doesn't work!

@Coco Bee: Our peep-out thingy on the door lets me see the whole front patio and the driveway/front yard. The problem is they can hear me if I have shoes on with our floor, but I quit caring about hurting their feelings by being obvious about not answering:) I absolutely never open the door if I don't know who it is, even for women...Women can be just as crazy as men!

@MamaMoose: you could just put up a sign saying so not ring doorbell instead.,, but I think it'd be easier to just turn it off.

@PrincessBaby: at our old place you couldn't hear the doorbell from upstairs so I didn't worry about it and hardly anyone ever came over.
How do you check who is at the door without them seeing you?

We put a sign on the door AND the doorbell telling people to call us instead of ringing or knocking because the dogs would bark like crazy and wake up DD. If I would have thought about it at the time, I would have seriously considered putting up something to shock the people that didn't read the signs.

I put up a little post-it note beside the doorbell saying not to ring the bell and leave the package by the garage. I'd say 95% of the time they obey my note. Sometimes they forget. So far so good though!

I put a sign out-please don't ring the doorbell, our newborn is sleeping. Since I wasn't leaving the house with the baby I was ordering a ton of stuff online AND we were getting a lot of flowers and other deliveries. I got so pissed when I saw a little kid (of reading age) ringing the doorbell over and over again--when I went to go check the mail after he left, either someone jacked my sign or it blew off my door!! good thing i didn't open it and let him have it. ;-)

Just today we had religious promotors ring our bell at 930am, Fedex rang our bell to let me know they left a package, and just now some random idiot rang it THREE TIMES bc he was promoting his pest control business (I saw his truck parked outside)... I never answer the door for anyone I dont know anyway. But if Harper was sleeping, I would have opened the door and smacked every single one of them...Especially the moron who rang it three times!!!! I know he heard me walk to the door in my tennis shoes, but the fact that I didnt answer it should have told him something!!!

I'm thinking DH needs to just unhook it!

I'm probably getting a "Do not knock- baby sleeping" sign too. I hate how much foot traffic we get at our door!!! Some idiot always wanting something/selling something...And we live in the 'burbs!

The BEST thing would be to get one those invisible shock things to zap people if they step onto our front porch! The ones that are used for dogs and cows- lol...That would be ideal:). And really REALLY funny!!! Just kidding!!!!

Hmmmmm...

Did you unhook your doorbell?
