It is a few inches below the mattress so she would really have to dig down, but putting up the crib bumper gave me an extra measure of security. With it, there is no possible way for her to reach down and pull gov the outlet covers. And it just seems unnecessary. She went through a "limbs stuck in the bars" phase but that lasted like... 2 weeks. I have her paci on a paci clip attached to her. We did not use one with DD2 at all as she has never gotten stuck.</p> <p>Both girls were in a PnP with mesh sides for their first seven and nine months respectively anyway as they slept in our room until that point, so it was a nonissue for us until after that. </p> <p>I can't quite visualise what the risk is with them though... Our (soon to be ped), the hospital, childbirth/baby care class have all told us that they are not recommended by the AAP. Their position is that anything in the crib other than a tight fitted sheet increases the risk of SIDS. When he started crawling he kept getting his legs and arms stuck and would scream bloody murder. So we used a bumper until about a year. We've just started having him sleep in the crib for the first stretch at night now at 3.5 months, but he learned to roll this past weekend so he's very active in the crib and lays with his face against the side a lot.
