We just started using one at 9.5 months, but we are using it because we lowered the crib and realized that there is an electrical outlet in the center of every wall of LO's tiny room, and she could theoretically reach it regardless of where we put the crib. It is a few inches below the mattress so she would really have to dig down, but putting up the crib bumper gave me an extra measure of security. With it, there is no possible way for her to reach down and pull gov the outlet covers. Not that she's able to pull them off anyway, but still... :silly:

No. There is a strangulation risk. And it just seems unnecessary. She went through a "limbs stuck in the bars" phase but that lasted like... 2 weeks. I have her paci on a paci clip attached to her. I don't see what purpose they really serve.

Not planning to, since as others have said, a stuck limb is better than suffocation or strangulation. LO is still wearing a Merlin suit though, so that keeps her from moving around much at this point.

I put one around DD's crib when she was around 7 or 8 months because she was getting her legs firmly stuck between the bars at least twice a night. It seems like it's on there really tight so I'm comfortable using it.

@Foodnerd81: yeah, I don't know. Same with co-sleepers, don't they have mesh sides? Maybe it has to do with the sides being shorter so there's more airflow.

@bluestriped bee: but if it's mesh, like the side of a pack and play, I'm not sure how that would be a risk. But, again, I never used one and never researched it much!

Eta: but for a traditional fluffy bumper, yes, definitely a suffocation risk for sids.

@Ree723: @Foodnerd81: From what I read here in this thread, I thought it was a SIDS risk since better airflow can help prevent SIDS.

Never needed them- she never got stuck or slammed her head on the crib. I was open to it if it was really needed it but I really never did.

@Ree723: I believe it's more of a strangulation risk than suffocation? I'm not exactly sure but I recall Mrs. Jacks posting about it at some point.

We used one with DD1 but not until she was just about a year old and constantly getting her leg stuck between the bars. We did not use one with DD2 at all as she has never gotten stuck.

Both girls were in a PnP with mesh sides for their first seven and nine months respectively anyway as they slept in our room until that point, so it was a nonissue for us until after that.

I can't quite visualise what the risk is with them though... Ours was mesh and velcroed together - I cannot for the life of me figure out how it would have been a risk to a baby....

LO not here yet but we will not use them. Our (soon to be ped), the hospital, childbirth/baby care class have all told us that they are not recommended by the AAP. Their position is that anything in the crib other than a tight fitted sheet increases the risk of SIDS. So, he can get his arms stuck - not worth the risk!

The first 6 months we didn't use a bumper at all. When he started crawling he kept getting his legs and arms stuck and would scream bloody murder. So we used a bumper until about a year. At a year old he started squishing it down to stand on so we took it out and he didn't get any limbs stuck after that.

We used one for LO1 and planned to for LO2 but I haven't gotten around to putting it in the crib. We've just started having him sleep in the crib for the first stretch at night now at 3.5 months, but he learned to roll this past weekend so he's very active in the crib and lays with his face against the side a lot. He gets his limbs stuck sometimes, but I'd be more worried if he was up against the bumper, so I think I'll be leaving it out this time around.
