With my first, all the nurses and hospital LC's said it was going great. I was in pain and had mastitis by the time I sought help. We went on to nurse 15.5 months. Nursing a newborn is different than nursing a toddler. I wanted an in home refresher and an additional professional to verify latch and positioning were good. We did not have any problems the second time, but I still felt the price of an LC was worth it. It gave me peace of mind. LO2 was born big, full term, and nursed easily. With LO2, it was so easy! I didn't have a single BF issue for the entire 14.5 months that I BF her. Ironically I never saw an LC with my first baby but I had much nire difficulty breastfeeding the second (wasn't prepared for that AT ALL!) My second was small, had a small mouth and chin and just couldn't latch properly, which in turn affected my milk supply. All is good now, but it was a rough few weeks!! It was VERY helpful. She said since my milk never really came in the supplements wouldn't help, they only help increase supply, not start it. But maybe my milk did come in and it was just a little bit, and could have used some help, I don't know. My son kept nursing (always combo feeding) until I went back to work at 12 weeks so it seemed like he was getting a tiny bit. (1) Babies are different and probably have different learning curves and challenges with nursing and (2) your muscle memory may not still be there if you are used to dealing with a toddler rather than a newborn. I will say, though, that I held an 8wo over the weekend and it felt so comfortable/familiar. I remember feeling very awkward and overwhelmed when my son was that small.
